The Invitation

“For God so loved the world….” John 3:16

We must stand

in awe,

in wonder,

in thankfulness,

in praise,

Lord God, at your ability and willingness to love us so.

You have made us those in whom you delight, rejoice and love.

You are gloriously great in your goodness and

persistently positive in your patience

as you faithfully work in us.

And in this you suffer grief every day

at our hands,

for we,

in our laziness,

selfishness,

pride,

rebellion

and unbelief,

choose to disobey you

and do our own deadly deeds

according our own puny plans.

And yet You continue to extend your invitation to us

to join you in your glorious and gracious scheme

for restoring the universe to its pristine pre-fall condition.

Help us, Lord, to repent moment by moment

leaving behind our minuscule matters

and wholeheartedly accept your offer for

being part  of the most significant thing we can do!

Rich and deep Love

“For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.

In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ,

in accordance with his pleasure and will….” Ephesians 1:4,5

In making us your children, Heavenly Father,

you have invited us into the deep, intimate relationship you have with the Lord Jesus,

giving us what you gave Him during in His time on earth:

affection,

fellowship,

authority

guidance,

provision,

protection,

and honor.

As you loved your only begotten Son,

so you love your only adopted children.

“Our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ”!!! (1 John 1:3).

We must stand

in awe,

in wonder,

in thankfulness,

in praise

for the wonderful gift of adoption.

Help us to walk daily in the light of your love, Lord,

warmed, encouraged and empowered to join you

in all you plan for  today.

Loved Richly by Jesus

In making us your children, Heavenly Father,

you have invited us into the deep, intimate relationship you have with the Lord Jesus.

You give us what you gave Him in His time on earth:

affection,

fellowship,

authority

and honor.

As you loved your only begotten Son,

We must stand in awe,

in wonder,

in thankfulness,

in praise,

Lord God,

at your ability and willingness to love us so.

In the midst of the turmoil of life today,

let us revel in, bask in, rejoice in

the lavish love of our Lord,

as we are

chosen, accepted, approved and beloved!

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.” John 15;9

The Father’s Great Love

“…when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,

much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” Romans 5:10

Lord Jesus, Your astounding act of justification

is the great gem of Truth in the New Testament.

You, the Just Judge,

by the propitiation of your shed blood,

satisfied the law and bought for us,

your enemies,

complete forgiveness.

By your work, Lord Jesus, we stand justified before the court of Heaven.

Adoption, however, is another matter all together.

Justification is a forensic idea,

meeting the demands of the law,

coldly correct,

handed down in court.

In contrast, adoption is a family idea:

warm,

accepting,

welcoming,

exalting to a new position of privilege and grace.

As J.I. Packer puts it in his powerful book, Knowing God,

the Judge becomes,

“our perfect parent,

faithful in love and care,

generous and thoughtful,

interested in all we do,

respecting our individuality,

skillful in training us,

wise in guidance,

always available,

helping us to find ourselves

in maturity, integrity and uprightness….”

What more could we ask for?

Let us exalt in His love,

rest in His goodness,

rejoice in the great privilege of knowing Him.

Lavish Love!

“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1

Heavenly Father, I share John’s wonder at this astounding truth: that you,

the Holy God,

the Righteous One,

the Just Judge,

the Creator King,

would take your enemies—

evil,

depraved,

ugly,

stubborn,

rebellious a

nd destructive as they are—

and transform them into new creatures, adopting them as your children!

What a turn-around: to bring your adversary into the palace and place him into your family!

This Agape love of yours is astounding.

In one way it is a brutal love,

brutal to you the Lover,

who gives and gives,

unswayed by the lack of positive response

from the rebellious, self-centered, unbelieving, negative objects of your love–us.

This love, so painful to you as you are grieved daily by our rebellion,

is so gracious to us:

caring,

kind,

forgiving,

correcting,

guiding,

rebuking,

nurturing,

providing,

directing,

cherishing.

What the Resurrection brought

My pastor’s Easter sermon pointed out some very wonderful results of Jesus’ Resurrection, each one illustrated in the life of Peter. These truths are ones that helped Peter to realize that knowing Jesus is enough for life.

First of all, the Resurrection turns our sadness to JOY.

Peter was overwhelmed with sadness at the loss of his leader and everything he’d hoped for. But when Peter ran to the tomb and found it empty, his sadness turned to joy. So should ours.

Second it brings CLARITY to our confusion.

Peter was confused about what Jesus was going to do. But after the Resurrection, he understood what had happened and he stepped up as the leader. So too we, in the midst of disappointment and suffering can have clarity that God has a plan and will carry us through.

Third it brings HOPE to our fear.

After Jesus died, Peter and the others were afraid, locking themselves in the upper room for protection. But after the Resurrection, they all became bold. We too, can be bold in our faith, living our Psalm 50:23 every day.

And fourth, it brings CONFIDENCE in the place of our shame.

Peter was overcome with shame after betraying Jesus, but the Resurrection brought him restoration through forgiveness. Then he went on to boldly, convincingly and powerfully preach the first sermon in the face of opposition. We, too, can be bold to share our faith, not letting the fear of man stifle us, for Jesus is always with us.

The Resurrection makes it possible for us, too, to live the Truth that “Knowing Jesus is enough for JOY!” Choose it!  (Along with CLARITY, HOPE, and CONFIDENCE!)

Tragedy and Triumph

The Tragedy and Triumph of Easter

“O LORD, the God who saves me, day and night, I cry out before you.” Psalm 88:1

May your name be exalted, Lord Jesus, for your willingness to be the Suffering Servant. You are glorious in your desire to suffer for your enemies.

As Psalm 88 prophetically says about you, “You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. Your wrath lies heavily on me.

You have overwhelmed me with all your waves. I am confined and cannot escape.”

So you were, Lord Jesus, overwhelmed, struck down, trapped under wrath and totally crushed.

You placed yourself directly in the path of God’s anger and were unescapably confined to it.

Psalm 88 continues “Why do you reject me and hide your face from me?”

When you, Lord Jesus, became sin, the Father turned from you, leaving you utterly alone under His wrath.

“I was taken from my closest friends; you made me repulsive to them.” You took upon yourself the sin of the whole world.

Even  more,  You became sin for us: ugly, repulsive, and despicable. And because of this, the fabric of the Trinity was torn—

those eternal, rich, beautiful, warm and perfect relationships were ripped apart as you, Lord Jesus, became sin for us

and as you, heavenly Father, crushed the Son to save your enemies.

“Your wrath swept over me, your terrors destroyed me…the darkness is my closest friend.” You, Lord Jesus, endured this wrath,

moved through it, drinking every last drop of the bitter pain—you not only endured the jeers of the Jews,

but all the aggressive attacks of the absolutely evil demonic forces.

You waited until the right second and then rose up to defeat Satan and death, shattering the strength of the foe who had enslaved all mankind with the fear of death.

You triumphed in a dazzling blaze of glory, defeating, dethroning, destroying death and the devil with all his diabolic plans.

Only you, only you, Lord Jesus, could have done this, and you did it at the right time and in the right way! You accomplished it perfectly!

Your work is finished, opening a doorway between the dominion of darkness and the Kingdom of Light,

calling all the prisoners of the devil to come out into the warmth of your love and forgiveness.

You, Lord Jesus Christ, are worthy of all Praise and Honor, Exaltation and Magnification.

You are the Great and Humble Lord, the Mighty and Meek Savior, the Most High and the Most Holy.

To you be glory, both now and forever more!

Judgement

“O LORD, the God who avenges, O God who avenges, shine forth.” Psalm 94:1

In a world full of injustice, you, Lord Jesus,

are the conquering One:

“El,” the God of might;

Yahweh (“LORD”), the Holy One who hates sin;

“Adonai,” the powerful ruler who provides all.

You are righteous,

you are pure,

you are clothed in light

and robed in majesty.

You look down on all mankind

and perceive the heart conditions,

the motives,

the schemes of everyone.

“The LORD knows the thoughts of man;

he knows that they are futile” (Ps. 94:11).

You are the mighty Judge who

in righteousness will ride forth in power

to bring perfect justice on earth.

You will avenge all who have been mistreated, harmed and misused.

You are the perfect One who knows

the exact time to display your righteous anger,

bringing judgment, punishment, and a proper sentence

on those who refuse Your Word, who reject your Truth.

You wait in love and grace, showing patience and kindness,

continuing to pour out your goodness on all,

working to give all the opportunity for repentance.

In the end, however,

the time will come for judgment

and you will not be late.

In perfect knowledge, perfect justice, perfect perception

you will mete out the perfect punishment

to each and every one who refuses

your offer to enter the shelter of the Most High.

To those who reject you as Savior,

You will come as Judge. May we be ready and in the Kingdom!

RUN!

A believing author wrote the following about the work of the Holy Spirit,

calling it a “plot twist” because it speaks to misconceptions

that many believers have  after absorbing the values

of the world floating around them.

“The Spirit doesn’t give you power to sin safely…

No, He gives you the power to say, ‘No’ quietly,

to stop asking, ‘How close can I get to the edge?’

Instead, He leads us to start asking ‘Why does this grieve Him.’

Under His guidance you don’t just confess sin, you turn from it,

not because you’re scared of hell,

but because you’re scared of losing intimacy with the Spirit.

You don’t justify anymore, you don’t blame anymore,

you don’t call conviction shame but see it as a call to move up.

Your heart breaks in the face of sin and runs ‘home’ fast.

If repentance is alive, the Spirit is present,

and if His fruit is growing, even if it’s slowly,

He is already working in your life. Stick with Him!

Strong Fruit

The fruit of the Spirit is familiar to many of us,

in fact, we can probably recite them easily.

But how often do we stop to think about the meaning of each?
Here’s how one person describes them in a challenging way.
Love is “inconvenient”,  it stays when it could leave.
Joy survives bad news.
Peace doesn’t need to control.
Patience “bites its tongue.”
Kindness needs no audience.
Good is there when no one is watching.
Faithfulness presses on when quitting would be easier,
Gentleness is strong, not weak.
Self-control shuts the doors before sin finishes knocking.
This is what the Spirit wants to develop in us,
These descriptions fit right  in with Jesus’ words:

“…If any man will come after me, let him deny himself,

and take up his cross, and follow me.” Matt 16:24

Are we cooperating?
