Today I’d like to write a little about Joseph, the husband of Mary. He is often envisioned as a somewhat mild and retiring man. But I think that is a wrong impression.

“For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens” (Ps. 96:5).
You stretched out the tent of the skies,
driving in its pegs firmly,
tying its ropes securely,
making it strong and sure:
it cannot be changed without your desire.
You spoke and the stars became,
you shepherded them into galaxies,
assigning them their places and names,
and at your command they settled there.
You spread the galaxies across the vast, empty stretches,
forming gigantic patterns,
beyond the perception and comprehension of man.
You, O Lord, are immense in power,
wonderful in wisdom,
awesome in creativity.
We exalt you in your greatness and your goodness; we bow before you in full and amazed submission, leading us to whole-hearted obedience.
We proclaim among the nations, “The LORD reigns!” You are truly God.
We prostrate ourselves before you in awe, in smallness, in humility that flows from a vision of your holiness.
You are God, you do what pleases you and it is always good.
So We tremble before you, the Holy One, the great I AM, the righteous Judge, the faithful Father.
You alone are worthy of obedience, of submission, of trust and praise.
Prayer: “You reign rightly, O Lord. Reign in me today. Convict me of where I am following my own whims and desires instead of your great goodness; bring me up short, bring me to submission. Amen.”
“For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.” Psalm 96:4
You, O Yahweh, are great beyond comprehension:
great in wisdom,
great in power,
great in patience,
great in creativity,
great in knowledge,
great in holiness,
great in love,
great in mercy,
great in justice,
great in strength,
great in kindness,
great in faithfulness.
You are truly most worthy of praise and honor and glory and exaltation.
Help me to live in this reality, to bring you all of them throughout today.
Especially by offering the sacrifice of thanksgiving, whereby I can honor you.
And there will be multiple opportunities to do this throughout the day. Help me not to miss any one!

“Teach me your way, O Lord; I will walk in your truth;” Psalm 86:11
Praise be to you, Lord Jesus, that you came to earth on Christmas to be the Way, to teach us your way, to be the Truth, to reveal truth to us.
It is wonderful that, in you, we can now know truth, see what is right and wrong, be aware of what is hurtful before we act, of what is good before choosing.
“Unite my heart to fear your name…” (Ps. 86:11b). You are the only One who can heal and unite our hearts, making us single-minded, whole-hearted, completely committed to Truth.
You are the only One who is worthy of that commitment, for you are
the great God,
the obedient Son,
the willing Sacrifice,
the Healer of the broken creation,
and the Bridegroom who died for your bride.
You bind up our wounded hearts and masterfully,
tenderly unite them to yourself.
Prayer: “Praise you that you give us the ability to choose to walk in your way, Lord Jesus. Help me to deny self and sin and to walk in your way and words. I bow before you in worship, in surrender and commitment, agreeing to do your will, to walk in your Truth, for you, Lord Jesus, are worthy of obedience. Amen.”
The day after getting that really negative email from Charlie, during my quiet time new thoughts came to mind of what to share with him. Sitting at my computer, a positive letter poured out of my head and into an email–it was truly a letter from the Lord.
In reply Charlie started by asking forgiveness for his incorrect interaction, and later another email came expressing further remorse at his angry words.
So, the Lord answered prayer and worked; I am deeply thankful that He got me to listen to Him, directing me to lift my soul to Him the night before. Through that He could give me both a good night’s sleep and His positive perspective ın the morning.
The key was lifting my soul to God by writing out my thoughts and then comparing them to Scripture. To just express them verbally alone does not bring for me the insight that comes with writing. It brings clarity on what is actually happening inside me so the Lord can give perspective and direction. It is truly good to “pour out our hearts to Him, for God is our refuge” (Ps. 62:8).
Prayer: “Lord, praise you that you call us to lift our souls to you. Help me to be consistent in honestly telling you what I am thinking, feeling, wanting, and processing these in the light of your Word. Restore my soul so that you may rule me wholly. Amen.”
You, Lord God, are the Mighty King, the Gracious God, our Loving Shepherd who is:
There is no one and nothing that can compare with you in greatness. You tower over all creation. You are outside of, over, surrounding and filling the entire universe. You are the only true God.
We bow down before your greatness,
we exalt your divinity,
we lift up your beautiful name,
we praise your unending faithfulness:
you are great, you are good, you are God.
I praise you that you are in control of my day right now, Lord Jesus, that you are working things out, bringing power into my weakness, holding back the tide of evil, limiting what Satan can do in my life, arranging the details of timing, providing and protecting. Therefore, in you I can rest.
You, O Yahweh, you are worthy of honor and praise, you are worthy of fearing and obeying, “For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods” (Ps. 95:3).
You are the One who is actually in charge;
you are Ruler and Director,
Sovereign and Limit Maker,
Controller and King–nothing happens without your permission.
You allow only what contributes to your plans, to bring glory to your name by sweeping all willing into your Dominion,
And you protect, equip, mature, break and deepen those who are in your Kingdom of Light.
You have evil on a short leash, able to do only what you will use to bring your plans to pass—primarily to bring people to their senses, to belief, to salvation.
You cannot be defeated: there is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against you (Ps. 33:10,11).
Your power is unimaginable,
your grasp of detail is mind-boggling,
going from the miniscule to the mighty,
from subatomic to super-galactic,
from counting hairs and watching sparrows,
to moving the universe and history to your desired conclusion.
I praise you, heavenly Father, that in your compassion and grace, your patience and wisdom, your power and love, you are able and ready to transform, train and teach each of your saints.
“My command is this: love each other as I have loved you.” John 15:12
The Lord has a way of answering our prayers at unexpected times with unusual means. Recently for me, an answer began with a discussion about how to hang up clothes in the closet. Barb hangs them so the opening of the garment faces right; I have always hung them the opposite way. One evening as Barb was putting freshly ironed shirts in the closet, she asked if I would start hanging my clothes the opposite way, the way she did.
I had had a day filled with details and pressures. I was not ready for a request that would add another detail to my already full plate, and that demanded reversing a habit (and a harmless habit, at that!) which had seen 50 years of reinforcement.
“What difference does it make?” I asked.
“To me it makes a difference,” Barb replied. As I pushed her for a reason, she continued, “The shirts won’t hang into each other if you put them in like this!”
Well, that didn’t make any sense to me, so I began to let her know that.
“Fine,” Barb said quietly, “Do it as you want.”
That gentle reply cut through my resistance like a hot knife through butter, as the Lord brought to mind a prayer I’d offered earlier in the week: “Lord, help me to serve Barb with joy, to do things which will reduce her stress and help her to be more effective for you.” What Barb had asked for was very small, something that would make her life easier, and here I was resisting. How foolish!
Verses from John 15 flooded my thoughts, “I am the true vine; my father is the husbandman…every branch that bears fruit, he prunes it so that it might bring forth more fruit.” That knife I felt cutting through my resistance was the Holy Spirit pruning off the useless, harmful growth in my life: selfishness, impatience, laziness and pride, to name a few. I want to bring forth more fruit, but often don’t want the pruning that is the prerequisite.
I am thankful that God is so patient and faithful to keep working on me,
that my dear wife is a patient and gracious soul
and that I could repent, apologize to her and hang those shirts in a way that made her life easier!
In this process of growth, God is pleased with us when we submit to Him and to each other in love, and then He gives us wonderful, undeserved benefits. In John 15:11 Jesus says, “These things have I said unto you so that my joy might remain in you and your joy might be full.”
And what did He say right before that? “Let me prune you; abide in me; do whatever I command you.” These are not things that we humans naturally want, but it is obedience that brings what everyone does want: joy.
You, Lord Jesus, are
the Creator,
the Savior,
the Sustainer,
the Beginner and Ender of time.
You are
the Weaver of the tapestry of history,
the Transformer of tumultuous times
and troubling turning points
that flow from man’s flawed reasoning,
using them for good.
What patience you have,
what care you take,
what wisdom you show,
what power you exercise
in the delicate control of what men and the devil are allowed to do—
only so far and then they must stop;
only so much and then judgment.
You, Lord, reign,
let all the earth rejoice.
In you our hope is great:
joy flows,
justice is stirring,
glory shines,
righteousness rules,
goodness grows,
grace is given,
and your Name is lifted up.
Prayer: “May all that be true in my life today, O Father of all, King of Glory, Ruler of my life.
May I continually lift up your worthy name, glorify you with all my heart, magnify your honor, and bow before your majesty.
I love you, Lord Jesus, I praise you and exalt you. Help me to obey you for your honor today, O Lord. Amen”
