Superior Salvation

You, Lord Jesus, have worked salvation for your enemies. Your amazing love is astounding, with your overflowing grace, your deep compassion and your tender concern for those who oppose and resist you

At the right moment, in a burst of blinding righteousness, the Father raised you from the dead, defeating all foes, opening the way for all to receive power and wisdom and grace, ushering into your Kingdom all who believe.

Your work of redemption was finished, the shelter from your coming wrath was complete and the invitation went out to all, for “all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God” (Ps. 98:3).

You invite us–we who are the opposite of you in every way–to come into your family, into your Kingdom, into your shelter, into your fortress, into your loving embrace where you become our Father, Savior, Brother and King.

You made us to “dock” with you, to fit into a perfect relationship with the Triune God, and you have stopped at nothing to make that possible again after the fall. We must, “…shout for joy before the LORD, the King” (Ps. 98:6b). Psalm 98:4,5 Help us to lıve worthy of you ın your Kıngshıp and Kıngdom.

Strength in Weakness

More thoughts on  2 Corinthians 4:16, “Though we are outwardly wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”

Aging becomes an opportunity to further shift our focus away from the passing things of earth to a deeper and timeless mindset as seen in Psalm 72:25, “Whom have I in heaven but you and earth has nothing I desire besides you.”

This leads us to thinking Truth rather than half-truths, thinking eternally rather than temporally. “So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Cor. 4:18).

Aging is also a further chance to understand Paul’s statement, “When I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Cor. 12:10). My increasing lack of competence in the natural realm is a platform upon which the grace of God can be displayed to all around me. It is an impetus to look forward to what God has for us as we age and can no longer depend on our own abilities!

Old age is the process of losing things; maturity is letting them go, embracing the truth that God has better things for us.

Prayer: “Father, help me to be continually moving from a natural mindset to a supernatural one, praising you in all, seeking to give you glory, seeing you as my all in all, letting go of what I can’t keep, holding on to what I can’t lose, and rising above the losses of life with joy. Amen.”

Here’s and example of “when I am weak, then I am strong,” Nick Vujicic, born without arms and legs, but as a enthusiastic believer is an inspirational speaker and evangelist, as well as husband and father.

The Benefits of Old Ager

Though we are outwardly wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” 2 Corinthians 4:16

The following thoughts flow from my beginning to lose hair and facing the possibility of becoming bald!

Aging is, to put it bluntly, the process of progressive deterioration of the body and loss of abilities and qualities. Hearing fades, eyesight dims, muscles lose strength, flexibility decreases, joints creak, energy wanes and the mind slows.

Many of these losses are more than physical, for they are also the loss of what has made us feel good about ourselves, of what gave us a sense of worth, importance and the ability to reach our goals. Therefore, the process of aging can be doubly devastating as things physical, mental and emotional are taken from us.

Looking at this from a different perspective, however, aging is an opportunity for a deepened life. It should force us to reexamine the values we have adopted, especially on an emotional level. As our ability to perform is taken from us by these losses, it is an opportunity to further turn our attention towards enduring values and truths.

It is an opportunity to affirm that our worth actually does not depend on our accomplishments but upon two unchangeable facts: as human beings we are made in the image of God and as believers we are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. In addition, our significance does not come from what we can do with our bodies and minds, but from being given important and vital roles in God’s overall plan for the universe: praise, prayer and persistence in doing what we know to be right and propagation of the gospel.

These all can be carried out in old age even better than in our youth, as we have had time to develop a character that reflects Christ. When we age to the point where we can do nothing else but exist, Christ’s kindness, love and grace can still shine out of our lives as we continually offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving (Ps. 50:23).

Unbelievable Love!

“Rejoice in the LORD, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.” Psalm 97:12

You, Lord God, are good and pure and  gracious.

I am impressed more and more with your great heart of creative goodness, of how you can take the wrong choices of people, as well as the negative consequences that flow from them, and turn them into good for the very rebels who shake their fists in your face!

You are so loving, so wise, so powerful, so persistent.

You continually pour out goodness on your evil creatures. You patiently wait for the right time to work in their lives; you wisely let them go off on their own ways so they can come to their senses and turn to you.

You are always there, patiently waiting, and patiently suffering with them as they grieve your heart over and over, rejecting the work of the Holy Spirit, choosing darkness rather than light.

You don’t up until belief or the final rebellion comes, and thens new life or deserved judgement.

May we consistently live in your love by obeying your commands today.

Answer to Prayer

A story of God’s foreknowledge and grace.

“Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Ephesians 6:11

In the cold of late December snowy while I was talking in the hall with our upstairs neighbor about the problem of getting more fuel oil for the furnace, one of the landlords of the building walked by. I took the opportunity to talk with him about his share of the building’s heating bill, which he had not paid. However, because he doesn’t live here. he was unreceptive to my suggestions, which meant that the rest of us had to shoulder his share of the cost–if we wanted any heat in our homes.

As he resisted all I had to say, I felt a hot flash of anger beginning to rise up in my chest at his imperious and negative replies. Knowing that if we talked much longer I was going to say something I’d regret, I abruptly and somewhat impolitely cut off the conversation and retreated into our apartment.

It was obvious, however, to all involved that I had become angry and I was chagrined about that. It was one of those instances where I hadn’t seen one of Satan’s traps coming my way and fell right into it.

One of my regular prayers is that God would help me to see Satan’s wiles before I fall into them, not afterwards. However, God does not always choose to answer in the way I’d like. In this case, He helped my humility develop a bit more with a little humiliation, and, more importantly, without my knowing it, prepared me for a more significant event.

A couple of days later I was having a very difficult conversation with one of our teammates here, and the same hot flash of anger began to rise in my chest. But the Lord used my previous failure to alert me so I could recognize what was happening. I could immediately turn to God for help, use His weapons of the shield of faith and the helmet of salvation and not fall into Satan’s attempt to trap me in my natural temper.

This situation was much more important than the earlier one, and I am so thankful that the Lord chose to warn me as He did, so I would not ruin several months of careful relationship building with one impatient response!

He very definitely answered my prayer: “Lord, today help me to keep on the armor and see the wiles of the devil before I fall into them! Amen.”

Eternal Glory

You, Lord Jesus,  are truly the Most High God.

You are the One to be praised in worship,

adored in love,

exalted in amazement

and lifted up in reverence.

In worship our eyes are opened,

our understanding is enhanced,

our knowledge is deepened,

our souls transformed.

As a result we will say:

“Let those who love the LORD hate evil” (Ps. 97:10a).

Yes, Lord, to love you is to hate evil,

for you are purely good, being

so loving and kind,

so gracious and pure,

so giving and forgiving.

Therefore,

To you belongs all glory,

all honor,

all praise,

all exaltation,

both now and throughout all eternity!

Prayer: “Lord Jesus, help me to walk in the light of your marvelous presence today,

thinking your Word,

living worthy of you,

pleasing you in all I do. Amen.”

Enlightened

You “…O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.” Psalm 97:

Yes, You, Lord Jesus, are the exalted One, the Most High One, towering far above all creatures, all creation, all time, all eternity.

**You are the final Authority,

++the Almighty King,

–the Measure of all good,

>>the Determiner of what is right.

You see all, you judge all, and you will end all. Your righteousness shines out from your being; in your purity you bring light; in your holiness you illuminate the world. You are truly the Most High God.

May we live in the light of your love and grace, walking in the shining of your presence. May we worship you with thankfulness each day, all day long.

Past, Present, Future, secure forever

As I write this it is New Year’s Day: Happy New Year. And with Jesus it will be a good one!

My reading today was in Romans 5 and I was struck with the way it reflected on the past, the present and the future. This was highlighted by the grammar used.
Rom 5:1  Therefore, since we HAVE BEEN justified through faith,”  This is the past,  an absolute certainty, it has happened and can’t be changed!

…”we HAVE peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,”  This is a present and ongoing reality we can count on.

Rom 5:2  “…through whom we HAVE GAINED access by faith into this grace…”  Another certainty of the past; it has happened and cannot change!

“…in which we NOW STAND.” A present reality that will stretch into the future.

“And we boast in THE HOPE of the glory of God.” Hope has always to do with the future, the certainty of what He has promised.

It reminds me of Psalm 139:4 telling of how He is intimately involved in our past, present, and future, from before birth and on.

“You hem me in behind [the past] and before,[the future] and you lay your hand upon me [present].

What encouraging thoughts as we move into a New Year, resting in the truth of the past, present and what He will do with us in the future!

New Life in New Year

As we enter a new month and a new year, we wish you a year of walking in the truth that “Knowing Jesus is Enough for Joy!”

Walking in this Truth is a choice. A choice to stop LISTENING to yourself and consistently TALKING to yourself.
One way to speak well to yourself is to memorize the Words of the Master Speaker. Memorizing and meditating on Scripture has been the most important practice of my whole life.
As you probably know, Psalm 1 strongly encourages us to meditate day and night; if you don’t memorize you can’t meditate day and night. And if we do, there are four wonderful results.
1. We will be like a tree planted by the river—getting our roots down into the water of the Word, remaining strong.
2. We will bear our fruit in its season—whatever fruit is needed, we will be able to supply it for those around us:
love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.
3. No matter what comes, our leaves will never wither for our roots are in the Word. In the midst of drought we will stay green and lush.
4. Whatever we do will prosper—because in memorizing and meditating we are learning to think God’s thoughts, to follow His ways, and this leads us to prosper.
So, I encourage you to make a decision to regularly memorize and meditate on Scripture, Start with Psalm 1.
This is not a call to a New Year’s resolution, but to a make a decision to wholeheartedly follow the Master Speaker so you can speak to yourself better!
