Psalm 16:8-9

Psalm 16:7-8
Psalm 16:7 “I will praise the LORD,”
[Yes, I will wholeheartedly, with every part of my being, praise you–such a wonderful Lord who, out your great love, pours blessing after undeserved blessing in our lives. You are worthy beyond all measure of all the worship I can give!]
“who counsels me;”
[“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5).
You are the God who reaches into my life moment by moment, speaking to me through your Word and through your Spirit, through the insights of others, through realizations and understanding.
When I am confused, uncertain or afraid, you are there to counsel me out of your measureless love and infinite knowledge. I can turn to you for wisdom and know for sure that you will give it.]
“even at night my heart instructs me.”
[As I wait for sleep and meditate on your Word, you teach me new things, reinforce old truths, reveal insights and bring further transformation.
Even in my dreams you speak to me, as Scripture comes to mind. Sometimes, without realizing I am in a dream, I face life-threatening circumstances and can respond with praise and trust, hearing the leading of your Spirit.]
Psalm 16:8 “I have set the LORD always before me.”
[To my shame, I cannot say that I do this always, but certainly want to put you first, to acclaim you in every aspect of my life, to have my heart open to your guidance at each juncture, to follow your leading constantly. Help me to do that consistently, Lord Jesus.]
“Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”
[In contrast to me, you, Heavenly Father, are totally consistent, always faithful. You have a detailed plan for me in each day and will carry me through it. You will never leave me; you are persistently there and will always give what is necessary in protection, guidance, wisdom and provision. So, there is no reason for me to be shaken, I only need to look to you, knowing that you will give beyond what I need. I can praise you in it ahead of time.]
Praise you, Lord, that as I go into this day, it is certain that you will be there, keeping me within the pleasant boundaries you have set to protect me, blessing me with your presence, giving me new vision to understand what is good and what is not.
I praise you for your great wisdom, your abundant love, your ever-flowing grace and your endless kindness. To you l lift up my voice of praise, to you I give my life anew. Glorify yourself today in all that will come, that those around may see your greatness and bow before you, too.]

Psalm 16:6

Psalm 16:3-5

Psalm 16:1
Psalm 16:1 “Keep me safe, O God,”
[You can easily do this, Lord Jesus, my Good Shepherd, for you are incredibly powerful, deeply wise, all-knowing, all-present and all-seeing. You are passionately loving and whole-heartedly compassionate. I can cry out to you, know that you will hear and that you will answer in the best way. Praise be to you.]
“for in you I take refuge.”
[This is my part, coming to you, meditating on Scripture, thinking Truth, trusting, praising before any answer comes—prayer without obedience does not “work.” As always, it is a partnership between you, Lord, and your children. I praise you for how you call us to join you in what you are doing, making us responsible.]
Psalm 16:2 “I said to the LORD, ‘You are my Lord;’”
[This is a statement of surrender—you are my Adonai, my Authority, the One I obey, the One who has the right to demand absolute obedience while promising absolute provision. To say “You are my Lord” means, “What you command I will do.”]
“apart from you I have no good thing.”
[This is a full focus on Truth—only you, Lord, are truly Good. All else that I have is chaff–temporary and worthless in the long run. As the author of Psalm 73 said, “Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you!”
To live this Truth is freeing, powerful and focusing: “apart from YOU I have no good thing!” All else must be viewed in relation to you, as elements of stewardship, tools, means of obeying and glorifying you. It is in you that all comes together.
Praise be to you, Lord God–Heavenly Father, King Jesus, Holy Spirit–for you are the reason for existence, the focal point of life, the eternal and infinite God.
Therefore, I choose anew to bow down before you, praise you, love you, glory in you, honor you, exalt your name and your Word, rejoice in you, revel in you, and obey you–all for your honor. May you be exalted in my life today.

Day 2 of Retirement

Retiring but not shy about it
An entry from my worship journal, written 18 months ago.
Praise you, Lord, for this, the first real day of my retirement from Christar. This is primarily a financial change, as I plan to keep on doing all the things I did before (teaching, counseling, writing, and traveling to speak as opportunities come), I just won’t get paid for them!
So, this will be a financial adventure, seeing how you, Lord, provide beyond social security. One thing we know for sure is that the Lord is our Shepherd and therefore we will not want.
A second way that retirement will change me is in attitude. I now feel free to do spontaneous things, like going out to breakfast with the guys after men’s prayer meeting on Friday mornings.
I don’t want to become less disciplined in how I use the time left, but want to be less focused on work and more on people.
This retirement coincides with my turning 70 this year. In the past, I’ve found that decadel milestones often bring changes in focus and responsibilities. I expect this to be a bigger one than previous “big O” years.
Hebrews 12:1-17 is my map. It certainly is a pleasure to walk with Jesus into the future, knowing that He has the course laid out for us, calling us to join Him in the adventure of the rest of our lives. I want to obey His command to lay aside every weight and sin that can so easily entangle, and to run with patience and perseverance the race He has set out before me.
It will require patience, for as we move into the future, I’m going to be losing things: strength, endurance, hearing and other physical abilities. Truly ,old age is the process of losing things, but maturity is letting them go and using these losses to focus on what God has for us. I suspect that worship and intercessory prayer will become the primary focus, with discipleship and counseling being the second.
Whatever it is, I can take my cue from Jesus, fixing my eyes on Him who, “for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross (for me that’s old age), despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Truly, to know Him is to have hope, to have peace and joy as we trust in Him, so we can move into the future with His presence, provision and protection. I look forward to living this out on a new level!
