Dig Deep!

“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.

She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown.” 4:7-9.

[Here are some thoughts from a post by Pastor David Hamburg.]

Reading the Word every day is a significant practice. But there is a question to ask

ourselves: in my reading am I an explorer or a tourist?

The tourist travels quickly, stopping only to observe the highly

noticeable and publicized points of interest.

The explorer, on the other hand, takes his time to search out all the hidden gems he can find.

Too many of us read the Bible like a tourist and then complain

that our devotional times are fruitless. It is necessary that we

take time to explore the Bible so that notable truths and hidden treasures will

appear as we get beneath the surface. So, which will you be?

Magnificent Love

“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 118:1

Praise be to you, O Triune God,

the Lover of your enemies,

the Redeemer of rebels,

the Forgiver of your foes,

the Transformer of truants,

the Adopter of your antagonists!

What a God you are,

what a Creator,

what a Forgiver,

what a Leader,

what a Lord,

what a King,

what a Father,

what a Brother,

what a Spirit!!

You are absolutely worthy of all worship, adoration and praise!!!

Prayer: “We give you glory and honor, O Lord, for you are worthy;

we bow before you, incredulous of your forgiveness and amazed at your grace;

we rise up, rejoicing in your redemption and exalting in your love;

we stand before you, surrendered in wonder, thankful in obedience.

May you be exalted, magnified and lifted on high in our lives today—for you deserve it! Amen.”

Partnership with God

“Praise the LORD, ALL you nations; extol him, ALL you peoples. For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD.” Psalm 117:1,2

I praise you, O Lord, for your great work in our lives, to transform us into the image of Christ.

This is your work, but requires our cooperation. Yours is the power, ours is the decision. Transformation comes from you, surrender comes from us.

This partnership is your gift to us, Lord, a wonderful invitation to the upward trail of spiritual adventure.

On one hand, this involves difficulty:

–death to self,

–denial of ungodly desires,

–rejection of selfish motives,

— being totally transparent before you and surrendering all.

On the other hand, it involves endless positives:

+receiving grace, accepting love,

+ believing truth,

+letting go of what binds,

+being set free,

+walking in the light,

+ experiencing inner transformation,

+having joy and peace,

+overflowing with hope,

+dwelling in God’s shelter,

+resting in His shadow,

+being His beloved child,

+ being delighted in and richly loved,

+ rejoicing in Jesus,

+fearing God,

+ loving God,

+praising God,

+and obeying God.       The right choice is obvious!

Psalm 117:1-2 says it all: “Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples. For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD.”

In All…..

“…give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thes. 5:18

Yesterday Barbara had surgery on two spots of skin cancer on her lovely face. It was quit traumatic and deep, with a skin graft necessary. Afterwards she had a lot of pain which led to a very bumpy night, being up numerous times, administering support and tylenol. Then today she bravely moved through the morning, including a trip to the motor vehicle department with me, but by the afternoon she wilted and had to rest the rest of the day.

The Word says, “Give thanks in all…”–hard when you suffer yourself, maybe harder when a loved one suffers. But we can give thanks because God allows hard times for His own wise purposes. It is  important that we embrace them, joining Him in His great plans. Think of the extreme example of Job, chosen for a major role in the mighty spiritual battle between good and evil. It was wrenching, overwhelming, and extremely challenging, but the book of Job has helped millions to answer the question, “Why is there suffering?” What if Job had failed the test and cursed God?

So we thank God for our minor difficulties, trusting Him to use them for good in the long run.

High Worship

“This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may WORSHIP me.’”

Exodus 9:1

We often think of music being the main aspect of worship, but actually everything we do can be worship: when we do what is pleasing to Him, or  obey Him–especially when we don’t feel like it–we give Him glory. That is worship.

In spoken worship there are two main aspects: thanksgiving and praise. Thanksgiving focuses on what He has done for us, and praise on who He is in His character.

Here is an example of focusing on God’s Character..

“Praise you, Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them.

Truly you are high and powerful, majestic and mighty.

I praise you, O God, for your great and rich love, for your wide and deep wisdom and your positive and pure power.

You are able to bring together those aspects which are opposites and seem to contradict each other:

unity and diversity,

truth and love,

justice and mercy,

righteousness and forgiveness.

You are able to be to be two things at the same time thatt appear to be  paradoxical.

You are one God, but three Persons,

You, Jesus, are both the son of David and the Son of God,

You hate sin but love sinners.

You know the name of every star (trillions of them), yet in spite of your greatness are aware of every broken heart and crushed spirit.

Praise you, Lord God, that you have revealed all  this to us in your Word, that we may worship you in Truth,

Giving glory to you while you transform us into your likeness.

Tomorrow an example of worship with thanksgiving.

Blessing in Disguise

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

As I’ve mentioned before, God  often takes one problem and uses it to accomplish something new.

This week when i plugged my iPhone into the charger, nothing happened. This could be a disaster as I use it all the time, and the next day I had to make a trip where I needed the gps on my phone! It was time for a sacrifice of thanksgiving.  I tried two other charging cords and thankfully as i wiggled the third one, it connected! I was thankful.

Two days later i was in Walmart and saw a kiosk for repairing iPhones, so I stopped in. The guy looked at it and said, “First we will try another charging cord,” –and it worked just fine! “All you have to do is get a new cord,” he concluded

While he was getting the new cord, I asked him where he was from, as he had an accent. “I’m from Azerbaijan,” he said. I knew that Azeri was a form of Turkish, so began speaking Turkish with him. He was surprised and very pleased, so pleased that he gave me a $2.00 discount on the cord!  Then we had a nice further chat in Turkish. I will follow up on that contact!

If I hadn’t had the problem with my phone, I’d never have talked with this man. Now I have a new friend and will share the gospel with him in the future. Problems often  open the door to good things, if we are willing to cooperate with the Lord!!

Beauty in the End

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:

Praise be to you, O Heavenly Father, our wise and all-knowing God. Your perspective is high and wide, long and deep. You understand and know all the aspects of every situation.

You have seen all the past, you already see what will happen in the future. You know all the facts and your will is fully informed.
Therefore, whatever you decree,
whatever you allow,
whatever you choose to bring is good, a part of your overall plan.
Your decisions may be painful to us, the opposite of what we desire,
but because you are the Good, Great, Glorious and Gracious One–we can trust you in each situation,
We can praise you and embrace what you bring, joining you in your great and beautiful plans.
And they are beautiful like this picture:

Help in Small And Big Things

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” Psalm 23:6

This is so true. Often at the moment we cannot see His goodness and mercy, but later as we look back it comes into focus.

So, in light of this,  I’ll follow up on the story of my muffler problem with my van. This morning the muffler fell off again, but this time just a short ways from home and I could drive home with the muffler dragging.

As I thought about what to do, it came to my mind that my neighbor had given me some ramps to drive a vehicle up on so I could look underneath better. I got those out, drove up on them and crawled under.

I could now see that there was a sleeve over the pipe coming from the engine with two bolts holding it on. So, I got my drill and a socket and was able to loosen the bolts, then lift up the muffler and slide that sleeve over both the muffler, and the pipe. I tightened up the bolts and there it was, a full repair!

Multiple God sightings showing God’s goodness. 1) It happened right next to my home. 2) My neighbor had given me those ramps. 3) The sleeve was there and I could loosen it. 4) I could then fasten the pipe and the muffler together solving the problem.

A minor thing in life but a reminder that God is at work in our lives in the big and little things; He is helping us whether we see it or not. It is good to remember to look back and see this, which strengthens our faith for future challenges: “As He helped me then, He will help me now!”

A Muffled Solution

The LORD will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:7,8

The Lord has an interesting way of solving one problem with another. Yesterday while mowing with my tractor, I got too close to the edge of the path and the front wheels got stuck. No matter what I did, i could not get it out. So today, after the rain stopped, I tried again, but to no avail. And in the process, the exhaust pipe fell off (not surprising for a 50 year old tractor), so I put it in my van and went home.

In the afternoon we went shopping, and as I pulled out of the Aldi parking lot in our 19 year old van, I heard a scrapping noise. I hopped out and looked underneath. The muffler had fallen off the exhaust pipe and was dragging on the road! It was either an “Oh no!” moment or a “Thank you, Lord!” one. I chose the latter.

In this happening God was at work. First this happened when i was going 5 miles  an hour, not 45 when it could have done some real damage. Also the spot where it happened was safe for me  to work on it. Now I needed something to tie up  the muffler, and looking it the van saw the muffler from my tractor with a length of wire on it! This was just enough to tie up the muffler and get us home!

So my tractor problem gave a way to help in my van problem! A double God sighting! He certainly does watch over our going out and coming in.

Rich Blessings

“Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.” Psalm 116:7

Your character, O Lord, is the basis of rest for us.

Your goodness surrounds us, giving us

air to breathe,

food to eat,

a place to sleep,

clothes to wear,

sight,

hearing,

taste,

smell,

touch,

love,

life,

light

and loveliness.

You have shared yourself with us in your creation,

which reflects your character

in complexity,

in beauty,

in practicality,

in variety,

in continuity

and faithfulness to the laws you laid down.

As you open our eyes to your goodness,

and through praise turn our focus away from the many blessings you give us,

to gaze on your lovely, pure, mighty and faithful character,

the worries, desires, lusts and cares of this broken world fade into the background.

They become opportunities to be transparent before you in confession,

the chance to praise you by faith,

the possibility to triumph in your provision,

and they are situations to demonstrate your grace on the stage of life.

Let us live in that beautiful reality!
