No Greater Love

More on the grace Jesus bestowed on us:

Beyond that, you were willing to endure the greater anguish of actually becoming sin for us and as a result, having your Father turn away from you. As the Father poured out His wrath on you, the fabric of the Trinity was rent and your eternal relationship with the Father and the Spirit was broken. This, I believe, was the most painful part of your great sacrifice.

Then you were willing to endure time in death and the lower earthly regions (Eph. 4:9), while patiently awaiting the right moment to rise up and conquer death and the devil—and all this you did for your enemies!

You, Lord Jesus, are completely, entirely, incredibly good and we glorify you for it. Your marvelous mercy and glorious grace are at the heart of your eternal, rich and powerful love for your foes.

We praise you and honor you for your multiplied grace, your munificent kindness, your majestic faithfulness and your magnificent holiness. We exalt you in all, we praise you in all, we thank you in all, for you are worthy.

Prayer: “Lord, help me to grasp more and more of your mighty love’s length and breadth, to understand more and more how deep and high and wide is your forgiveness, and to live in continual worship of you, honoring your marvelous grace by obeying you, especially in the small things of life. Amen.”

Perfection

Who is the Lord Jesus?

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High….” Psalm 91:1

I exalt you, O Lord Jesus Christ, for you are
the Most High,
the Final Authority,
the Absolute Measure of right and wrong,
the Perfect Standard of what is correct and what is error.
You are like a perfect, flawless diamond!

“will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1b

You are the Almighty One,
full of power,
endued with strength,
undefeatable,
never threatened,
never in danger,
always in control.

We can rest in your mighty strength,
your multifaceted wisdom
and in your marvelous character.
For You are pure,
and righteous;
you are the antithesis of
evil,
sin
and wickedness.

We rejoice in your purity and give to you the honor due your name for your rich goodness and powerful greatness.

You, Lord Jesus, are
the Author of life,
the Redeemer of rebels,
the Savior of the world,
the Lord of those who believe.

I praise you for your desire to redeem us, your wretched foes. You were willing to
limit yourself to a human body,
to suffer at the hands of sinners,
to expose yourself to attacks by Satan
and to suffer physically,
mentally,
emotionally
and spiritually on the cross to save us stubborn sinners.

You, Lord Jesus, are worthy of our worship, out love and our obedience. Help us to live this day in the light of your glory and goodness, walking with you in the path of God.

Being Shepherded

I praise and thank you, Lord Jesus, that you are my Shepherd–that I personally belong to you, the Creator and Sustainer of all–because you have chosen me. I am thankful that you, in your wisdom and power, love and goodness, make sure that I lack nothing necessary.

Thank you that in my present painful relational circumstance. Even  with my failures and mistakes, you are making this situation into a green pasture for me. You command me to lie down in it because here I can grow and mature and be more useful for you.

Thank you for Psalm 23 which tells me that while I am in these difficulties you lead me to the refreshing water of your Word, that you are at work transforming my soul, and that you will lead me in paths of righteousness. These truths are certain and sure, for you always do what will bring glory to your name, you will never lead me into anything that will disgrace you.

It is so good to know how trustable you are, Lord Jesus. Your wisdom is wonderful, your faithfulness is fabulous, your love is lavish, and your might is marvelous. Praise be to you continually, O God, for you are worthy!

Prayer: “Lord Jesus, help me to live in the truth that you are my Shepherd, that I lack nothing, no matter how it appears to me. Help me to trust you and stay where you put me, painful as it may be. Help me to be thankful for all you’ve given and to reject the tendency to complain about not having all I desire. Amen.”

What am I full of?

“He who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.” Proverbs 27:7

To read through the Bible continually and consistently is a powerful practice. This gives the Lord opportunity to impress me with a verse, insight or conviction in each morning’s reading. For instance, recently the verse listed above struck me: “He who is full loathes honey, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.”

As I thought on this, the Lord said to me, “What are you full of?” I had to answer, “Plans, schedules, projects, worries and fears.” The Spirit then helped me to see that I need to empty myself of these and allow Him to fill me instead with wisdom, submission, obedience and the fruit of the Spirit.

One way of emptying myself is to list in my journal all my plans, schedules, projects, worries and fears, then put them into the Lord’s hands by confession, prayer and surrender. I must let Him carry these; they are beyond my control anyway!

When I have done that, I can be ready for what the Lord has for me today. Every “bitter” happening can become sweet as I trust the Lord to work it out for good rather than getting upset because “my plans” were disturbed.

As with every other aspect of our walk with Jesus, the practice of putting all in the Lord’s powerful and proficient hands is a growing one. To help the process, I am putting a sign up on our refrigerator: “What are you full of?” This reminds me to put things in the Lord’s hands and be filled with His Spirit instead.

Prayer: “Lord, help me to pour out to you all that occupies my mind, my heart, my soul; then I pray that you will fill me with your Spirit so I can serve you well today, bringing joy to your heart.”

Sowing

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18

This verse was just what I needed to hear. In the Middle East, where we lived for many years, as well as back in America, I have found myself trying to make the gospel more acceptable, more respectable, more comfortable for people to accept—but to no avail.

To those who do not believe, the pure gospel can never be attractive or easy to accept, for it is foreign, unnatural, even repulsive. To think of themselves as so sinful that they need a Savior, to think of God Himself dying on a cross in their place, to think of surrender to Him and having a total change of life as a result—this is more than they want to hear! And we experienced this directly this week. We went an invited  about 20 of our neighbors to a Discovery Bible study—but no one came!

Facing this truth of man’s natural rejection of the gospel throws me back to dependence on God, on the Holy Spirit’s work, thereby saving me from dependence on myself—I cannot convince anyone to believe, only God can do that. It also frees me to go ahead and share without being controlled by fear of rejection.

As the King’s heralds, we will be rejected by many listeners, but that must not stop our proclamation of Truth, unpalatable as it may be to unbelievers. “God has chosen the foolish things…the weak things…the base…the despised…the things which are counted as nothing…that no flesh should glory in His presence” (1Cor. 1:27-29).

So, we are sharing, sowing seed and looking for those whom God has prepared for the next step in their spiritual journey. What freedom there is in knowing that we are joining Him in His reaching out to the world. To be committed to the Lord of the universe, seeking to cooperate with Him in what He is doing, knowing that He will guide and lead us to those He’s already working in—these are wonderful privileges and fear-killing truths. We can trust the One who said His Spirit is at work convicting all of sin, righteousness and judgment. He will bring forth fruit at the right time as we faithfully follow Him.

Purpose and Meaning

I praise you, LORD GOD,  for the perfection of your character: you are always righteous, always loving, always true and forever good.

I am deeply, firmly, continually thankful that

you are real,

that you are there,

that you are actively,

intimately involved in my world.

Without you, what is life but an empty pursuit of selfishness, ending in meaninglessness and death? We were made for you:

by you we are loved,

with you we are complete,

in you we have protection,

purpose in life,

power in troubles

and provision in all our needs.

You, the God of hope, desire to give us all joy and peace as we trust in you, so that our lives can overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 15:13).

You constantly and consistently pour beauty and grace into our lives. To know you is to have all that the human heart could desire: belonging, worth and competence. And, in addition to all this, you are ever at work in us to make us more and more into the image of Christ.

You are the center of my life, you are the meaning of my existence, you are the love of my heart. I want to praise you, glorify you and exalt you in word, thought and deed. You are worthy of worship and glory and honor no matter what, and I will seek to give these to you today!

Prayer: “Lord, bring a continual revival in my life, revealing to me more of your holiness, more of my depravity and more of your great love and forgiveness. Undo me, so that I may be redone in the image of Christ. Amen.”

Positive Burden

More on the illustration of the spiral staircase.

Each problem that comes to us has the potential to be a burden or to be the next step up, moving us upward and onward in our walk with Jesus. The key is our response to it. As Psalm 50:23 says, “He who offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving [giving thanks by faith when we don’t feel like it] honors me, and opens the way that I may show him the salvation of the Lord.” Praise and thanksgiving given out of faith as acts of the will, not the emotions, are powerful transformers of problems and sins into the next step up.

As we spiral up the staircase, we will have to deal with the same weaknesses of our character over and over. Satan will say, “Look, you aren’t making any progress; you might as well just give in and surrender to this temptation. Enjoy this sin!” The truth is, however, that we aremaking progress, for each time we encounter the same sins we are on a higher level; and the answer is the same as before: praise God for the revelation, apply truth in obedience and repentance, and step up.

As you read through these devotionals, which are presented in the approximate order in which they were originally written in my journal or prayer letters, you will see the upward spiral. Themes will be repeated, each time from a little different perspective. You will sense growth, movement, maturing. Hopefully this will help you, too, to move upward in your journey with Jesus, making each problem, each difficulty, each suffering and each hardship the next step up.

Prayer: “Lord, help me to cooperate with you as you desire to lead me on to higher levels. Help me to think as you think, to become a person of praise, turning problems into progress. Amen.”

The Way Up

“The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets…. ‘Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.’”

Psalm 50:1,5

The Christian life is like a spiral staircase winding upward to Heaven. The central support, the column of Truth, is made of pure gold, while the steps of obedience are of translucent crystal.

When we first become followers of Jesus, there are seven steps in place, taking us up one full turn of the stairway. Each step is a major lesson the Lord has for us, teaching us the basics in dealing with our personal sinful tendencies and practices, such as impatience, selfishness, pride, jealousy, greed or lust.

Depending on how teachable we are, going up these first steps may go quite quickly, or may take us a long, long time. Some who are unwilling to learn and repent may never make it up these seven steps at all; their refusal to listen to the Spirit strands them on the lower rungs of the spiritual life.

When we come to the seventh step, we have to stop. The golden central support goes on up, but with nothing more to step up on, we are stymied.

“OK, Lord, I need another step to go higher!” we pray. No step is given, but in time a big black burden, some type of problem, appears on our shoulder. “What’s this, Lord?” We exclaim. “I need a step up, not something to weigh me down!”

Then as we struggle to balance this burden, we realize it looks familiar. It is a variation of one of those sins we learned to deal with on the way up. If we respond in repentance, we can lower this burden before the Lord, confessing our sin to Him, thanking Him for revealing this to us again and praising Him for His goodness and wisdom. As we do this, the black, ugly burden is miraculously transformed into translucent crystal, becoming the next step up!

Trusting Him

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”  Psalm 43:5

Written in the 1990s. The world is an increasingly dangerous place, and at the moment it is becoming potentially more dangerous from confrontations with Iraq and North Korea. Is there any safe place left? As the US prepares to invade Iraq, think of those living in the countries around Iraq and how unsettled they must feel, to say nothing of the Iraqis themselves!

What should our response as believers be to such a situation; what if you were living in a country bordering Iraq, as we are at the moment, well within the range of Saddam’s missiles?

Certainly Satan would like us to worry and fret: his three major weapons are lies and fear, along with violence. But our weapons are more powerful: Truth, Faith and Love. Psalm 91 gives us some definite perspective here.

Verse 2 says: “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge.’” Picture Him drawing you onto his lap where you are safe and dearly loved.

He is “My fortress.” Picture a huge, solid castle wall surrounding you, keeping the enemy out.

“My God in whom I trust.” Picture a mighty and glorious being, standing there protecting you; He is so big that all you can see is the bottom of his big toe! No one can get to us without His permission. We are absolutely safe with Him no matter how things appear. Our eyes need to be lifted from the situation to God: He is the Almighty Ruler, the One who has never been defeated and never will be.

And so it turned out as God protected us from Sadam Huseyien’s missiles and other threats. And so He will protect us today, for He is still our refuge and Fortress, our God in whom we can trust. Our job is to trust. Can we do that?

Unending Faithfulness

“He remembers his covenant forever, the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations….”

Psalm 105:8
This morning I woke up late, have a headache and a scratchy throat, had disturbing dreams and am groggy. This is a great chance to praise you, Lord Jesus, for your unchanging, ongoing, immutable, eternal faithfulness, your consistent character and beautiful being.

I change, vacillate, fail and am fickle, but you, Lord Jesus, are rock-solid, reliable, never wavering, fully faithful, always true, reliably righteous, ever the same, ever perfect.
My ups and downs become an impetus to praise you, Lord Jesus, as they highlight the unwavering majesty of your mighty and magnificent character. You are the perfect One, whose plans stand firm forever and whose purposes continue through all generations. You promise, you follow through, you fulfill—always.

I think of the time gaps between the giving of prophesies in the Old Testament and the fulfillment in the New:
–the promise given in the Garden of Eden of your coming as the Deliverer from the curse;
–the promises to Abraham some 2000 years before your coming;
–the Psalm 22 prophetic poem of David, written 1000 years before your incarnation, detailing your death on the cross long before crucifixion was known;
–the clear declaration in Isaiah 53 of the details of your work of salvation, written 700 years before you accomplished them.
–So sure was the carrying out of your plan that you are called the Lamb of God, sacrificed before the foundation of the world.

In the same way you will keep your promises to us. Your faithfulness flows on like a river. For instance, “The Lord is my shepherd, i will not want.” Psalm 23:1. So here I am with a headache and busy day before me, but I know that in your faithfulness you will carry me through, for you are my faithful and good Shepherd!
