Our only true Help

More from Psalm 86

“O my God, save your servant that trusts in you.”

When faced with the two sides of Truth–my weakness and your gift of holiness–the conclusion is obvious: don’t trust in myself, instead trust in you, throwing myself on your mercy.

You, Lord God, King of Glory, Judge of the Ages, could rightly condemn me immediately to Hell right now. But instead, you continually pour out your goodness upon me as well as on all your enemies.

How can we not trust you? In the turmoil of life, only you can help us, save us, bring us through.

“Be merciful to me, for I cry unto you … all day long.” Praise you that we can continually appeal to your wonderful, full-orbed character, oiled with mercy, motivated by love, moved with grace.

Heavenly Father, Creator and Lord of all, I praise you that we can come to you any time, all the time, and that you delight in our praying. Praise you that your heart is ever open to the cry of your children and that we can be certain that you will answer at just the right time.

Worship followed by Obedience

“Bow down and hear me O Lord, for I am poor and needy.”  Psalm 86:1

Yes, Lord, I in myself and we in ourselves are poor and weak.

Without you we are powerless, directionless, in the dark. Our tendencies are all in the wrong direction: we are naturally proud, judgmental, divisive, lazy, selfish and unbelieving, fighting each other, wanting control.

We are hopeless without you, Lord; alone we can do nothing right. This is one side of the picture. Help us in the church to recognize this.

“Preserve my soul, for I am holy…” (verses from Ps. 86:1-3). The other side is that you have made us holy: you called, cleansed and transformed us; you claimed us as your children; you commissioned and equipped us for special service to you.

Now we stand before you dearly loved, decisively accepted, delighted in, deeply cared for, doted on, and doubly blessed in being your children–when what we actually deserve is Hell.

We are given over and dedicated to you, Lord. We praise you for the great grace, the immense grace, the unfathomable grace you show us in this.

You are the God who deserves worship and praise, love and obedience. May we give that to you today!

Experiencing God’s Love

Yesterday was a great demonstration of God’s love orchestrating things in our lives.

We had been invited for a free dinner on Wednesday at a restaurant to hear a pitch from a funeral home. But I forgot and we missed it.

Thursday I had a bunch of errands to do in the morning: going to the dump, the town hall, and the health department—which was right down the street
from the restaurant we had been invited to. I knew that there was another session today and it was 11:55, so I decided to stop in and see if we could get that free meal.

I parked in an awkward place just to go in and ask, and the lady said, “Sure, we always have no-shows so there’s room.” I went back and reparked. That little bit of extra time meant that we entered the restaurant exactly as two men went in ahead of us. And as they turned, I realized they were good friends from my high school and after.  In fact, one of them had  worked with me in my father’s tire business for several years.

We were able to sit together and had a wonderful time visiting. And most importantly, I was able to share with them how my father and  mother had come to Christ in their mid-80s. These men knew my parents well, and also had heard the gospel in their youth, but to my knowledge had not made a commitment. So here was more  input for them, giving them strong evidence of God’s work in resistant people!

Think about how God worked things out for this meeting: having us leave home at the right time, spending the right amount of time on each errand, arriving at the restaurant at the perfect  time–right down to having to repark so we walked in with my friends and were able to sit together.  “Coincidence” one might say; or “serendipty” as one of  those friends said–but it was much more than that: a 4 star God sighting. Another chance to glorify God by experiencing His love and having my faith grow.

This was an exact  fulfillment of Ephesians 3:19 which says, “to know this love that surpasses knowledge [not just knowing His love, but experiencing it through God sightings]—[and the result] that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” And so we were filled with joy!

Lessons for Life

After 78 years of adventures with Jesus, I want to share the many biblical lessons God has taught me over the years. Many of these He taught while having me live in multiple cultures, which makes them applicable most anywhere.  And most of these lessons came out of problems, difficulties and failures, which makes them “battle tested” and trustworthy.

I have now put a number of these lessons into simple videos. They are useful for personal growth, for counseling, teaching and discipling.

They cover subjects such as the following, with more in the works. They are, of course, free.

If you find them useful,  please tell  others about them.

Walking in Light

 From my worship journal.

“The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble….” Psalm 99:1a

Praise be to you, Lord Jesus, that I feel far from you today—an opportunity to walk by faith, to know that, in spite of my feelings, you are near and that I am with you–for you are faithful.

Praise you for the lack of feeling and the abundance of truth. I choose to live by truth, by faith today.

The Lord “sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake” (Ps. 99:1b). Yes, You, Yahweh, are the absolute ruler of the universe.

–You are the most High,

— the final Authority,

–the undisputed King.

No one can oppose your decisions for long.

–You will win in the end, for you are God:

–your power is infinite,

–your understanding is unbounded,

–your knowledge is limitless,

–and your wisdom is unfathomable.

No one can plan or attack or rebel without your knowing about it long before hand.

Your being such a powerful God, means we must tremble and quake before you.

We are tiny, powerless, ignorant, sinful and weak.

There is nothing we can do to prevent you from carrying out your plans for the universe.

You are sovereign: no matter what we or anyone else may do, you will bring your overall desires to pass in the end.

So we bow before you and agree to walk in the light of your truth today, that you may be honored and we protected.

Lost but not Gone

Another adventure with Jesus.

Last week I lost my iPhone, which is an essential part of my work (and life!). That means not only that I lost my phone, but all my stored information: phone numbers, pictures, texts and messages.

Emotionally this could be equivalent to falling into a deep dark pit (communication cut off), or it could be launching off on an adventure with Jesus. And how does one do that? Simply by trusting, implemented by offering the sacrifice of thanksgiving, as it says in Psalm 50:21, and when we do that, we honor God and open the way for Him to show us the salvation of the Lord.

Well, I kind of hoped He would bring the phone back to me, but He had other plans, little gifts along the way.

–First I found that I could have all calls to my cell directed to my home phone. Great!

–Then I was able to get a used phone exactly  like my old one.

–Then my provider promised  to send out a new sim card right off.

–Then when I got the phone, I found that I could send and receive texts over wifi without the sim card.

–And most importantly, as I was setting up the phone, it prompted me to download all my data from the iCloud! So I didn’t lose all that after all!

But then another bump in the road. The supplier delayed sending the sim card, and after it was finally sent, the mail was very slow: projected arrival was over a week! Hmmm, another chance to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving.

Finally today it arrived but when I tried to install the sim card, the directions didn’t make any sense. Called the provided and a person walked me through the long process, except, it would not allow me to send texts. After several tries, I was connected to apple help; the person there also struggled to resolve it, but after more than an hour got it to work! Success at last! Hopefully that is the end of the adventure.

This was actually not a big thing in life, but embracing this as an adventure protected me from much stress, wasted energy, unhappiness and anger, all of which would have resulted in outbursts at others. But Jesus offers us peace and joy in the midst of difficulty, big or small—if we only will trust in Him and receive that peace and joy (Romans 15:13).

More Adventures with Jesus

Then there’s the adventure of dealing with difficult people (not that we are such a one at times!). The world is full on unhappy, hurting people, those who in their pain strike out at others. It is very easy to see such people as enemies, to avoid them, or to give it back to them.

Jesus has a different perspective for us: “…love your enemies, do good to them.” (Luke 6:35). So when we run into prickly people, we are not to “prickle back,” not to reply in kind, but to do good to them.

The question is always, “How?” We, obviously we don’t let them “push our buttons,” but view them for what they are, poor, angry, hurting individuals. First is to pray and ask God for wisdom. Then either disengage (not entering an argument is doing good), or reply kindly, not denigrating the other, but saying positive things.

One time I got a call from a man I’d been working with. He was very angry and told me off in no uncertain terms, accusing me of things I hadn’t done. When he hung up on me, I was shaking from the vicious interaction. I took some moments to calm down. What I wanted to do was write him a nasty email and give to him what he’d given me. But I knew that’s not what God wanted, so I went to praying, thanking God for this difficult happening, asking Him for wisdom. He led me to forgive this man, to ask God to do good to him, to put him in God’s hands.

The next morning, I got an email from him, but didn’t open it, not wanting another bad experience at the beginning of the day. I should have opened it, for he wrote apologizing for his behavior and making a reasonable request to rectify the situation! Doing good can bring good; not always, but can.

It was an adventure with Jesus, a chance to trust him, to do what He commands when I sure didn’t want to—and He worked it out! I need to remember that when the next adventure comes, as I have not always responded so well!

Another Adventure

Here’s another adventure: playing a part in snatching people out of the jaws of eternal death in Hell and pointing them to the way to living forever with Jesus.

Today was a” hohum day” for me with phone calls, vacuuming and some computer work. Then two construction workers came to look at a possible rental space.

As is my habit, near the end of our business I said, “You know I have two terminal diseases: A G E, and kidney failure, so I’m going to die pretty soon. But that’s ok because I know where I’m going.

I continued, “And you, too will die sometime.” They nodded. “So, when you die and get to the gate of heaven where the angel asks you, ‘Why should I let you in?’ what will you say?”

As often happens, they were taken aback: they had never thought about that. As they fumbled to give an answer one said, “I did my  best,” the other, “I was kind.” So I shared the gospel briefly and clearly, and gave them a 4 spiritual laws booklet. This led to an interesting conversation with these rough, tough guys. One told about his near-death experience many years ago, the other about his Catholic upbringing. They went away enlightened and thoughtful.

That was an adventure! Now it is time for another adventure: praying for these men. And I will have opportunity to talk more as they have become my new renters!

We are called to be partners with God in His great plan. This is much  more than having the Eagles football time asking you to come and play for them! It is joining the Creator of the universe who breathed the stars, hung the earth on nothing and will bring about the end of history. Nothing is bigger than that!

His word to us is: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that YOU MAY DECLARE the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

Off to an Adventure

Many people crave adventure, and some pay a lot of money to have on, like going to Disneyland, or a trip to Antarctica, or even a trip to outer space.  But all these adventures are short-lived, for then you have to return to everyday life (yawn).

But there is one adventure that needs no money, no travel and never ends in this life. Jesus calls us to this: “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me.” If we follow Him, He then lays out a course of adventure for us every day: “Run with endurance the race marked out for you, looking to Jesus….” This better than spending a full day with….(fill in the bland with someone you admire).

Every morning as believers, we wake up, strap on our armor and enter the great conflict between good and evil—and we are always on the winning side! Our lives have purpose, a purpose stretching on into eternity. The things we do can last forever. And we will earn rewards as we enter the fray following King Jesus.

You never know what’s going to happen. The adventure could be as simple as things not working out as planned, giving you a chance to defeat Satan by offering the sacrifice of thanksgiving, thereby honoring God—a significant happening.

Or it may be a chance to have a God sighting, like yesterday when I went to the store and there was a fellow I’d been trying to get in touch with. Perfect timing showing God’s working in my life.

In my next post I will share more of the kind of adventures we can have with Jesus

Through the Dark

The road of life dips and turns, taking us through dark places as well as out  into the light. Our part is to continue on when things look bad and not to hang back or turn in fear. God has laid out the course for us, and Jesus is traveling with us (Hebrews 12:3 “run the race set out for you, looking to Jesus the author and finisher of your faith.”

When the path dips into the swamp, it is a great opportunity to live by faith, to honor God, to join with Him in a deeper way. It can be as simple a thing as losing your phone (as I did recently). In the scheme of things that’s a pretty small loss. But along with the phone, I lost all the info on it, including all my pictures. So I offered the sacrifice of thanksgiving and let go of those things. God says that by doing this we open the way for Him to show us the salvation of the Lord. And his help was not long in coming.
I was surprised to  find that when i got a used phone and started to set it up, that one step was downloading all my information from the Cloud!  I had no idea that was possible, but was very thankful for it.  Just a small thing, but it again showed how God helps us in our weakness.
Now I have another chance to offer thanks, as I just found out that my new sim card won’t come until the middle of next week! So I can’t make any phone calls. But at least with my wifi I can do texting, and the sim card will come in God’s time.
What a privilege to  join God in what He’s doing so he can fill us with all Joy and Peace in the midst of difficulty and disappointment (Romans 15:13). It’s simple: offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, knowing the road will leave the dark area and come again into the light.
