“I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts.” Psalm 119:45

Praise you, Lord, that I awoke this morning and there you were, waiting to present me with a new day.

You are always fresh and strong, ready to share this day with me.

You will lead me through the maze of events, all of which you already know about, having prepared all in detail.

My part is to listen, praise and obey. Guide me in doing this well.

I praise you now that you are

the Rock,

the Shepherd,

the High Tower

and the Light of my life, shining steadily whether I can sense your presence or not.

On you I can depend,

for you are faithful,

you are wise,

you are gracious,

and you are immutable.

In the light of these Truths

May my commitment to you, the eternal, living God,

be that of the Psalmist today.

“You are my portion, O LORD;
I have promised to obey your words.

I have sought your face with all my heart;

be gracious to me according to your promise.” Psalm 119:57,58

So, may you be exalted, glorified, honored and praised in my life throughout the entire day. Amen.”

Ultimate Winner

Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.” Psalm 73:25

More on the idol in my trophy case. Here’s a clue: it showed up on February 3 when the Patriots football team, after a perfect season, lost their final game, the Super Bowl.

I was amazed at how it affected me: I had trouble sleeping that night and every time I thought about it, which was often, sadness came over me.

So what was my idol? It was not being a Patriots fan. Nor was it following the football outcomes.

No, my mistake was hanging my happiness on the my team having a perfect record.

The reality is they had a great season even though they lost the Championship

.

It is normal to be a little sad when your team loses. It is not normal to be so down that you have to go through the grief cycle,

to be almost depressed about an event that in the grand sum of history has zero importance.

Another factor in this idol is that I like to be linked to a winner, as the Patriots were this season.

It gives a sense of significance, of excitement, of glamour.

In the end, though, no human being or institution is always a winner; there will always be losses and let downs.

In contrast, as true followers of Christ, we are tied to the Winner, Jesus, who has defeated death and the devil.

He is triumphing each day in helping His children to reject temptation, to live godly lives and in bringing many new believers into His Kingdom.

And in the end, He will complete his triumph over all evil. Plus, He is inviting us to join Him in His great victories and to share in His glory.

“When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you will also appear with Him in glory” (Col. 3:4).

And “all kinds of trials…have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith…

may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed” (1 Pet. 1:6,7).

God is moving history to a conclusion and taking us with Him!

Are we following or are we camping out in idol land?

I praise God I was disappointed on February 3rd, for He had far greater things for me (and many others) than a perfect season for my team!

This loss took my eyes off the temporal and got them back on the eternal.

Prayer: “Lord, help me to set my heart on things above, to live in the stability of your character, the certainty of your victory, the security of your power.

Help me to be quickly aware of idols in my life and confess and abandon them immediately. May you be glorified in this. Amen.”

Idol Thoughts

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” Colosians 3:2,3

The idol was standing there in the trophy case in my heart, right in plain sight, but I didn’t see it.

Like many sins in my life, I overlooked it until the Lord powerfully and painfully shone His light on it.

Each step in the ongoing revival in my life has been like this: God putting His finger on the next area of sin that needs to be surrendered to Him.

Perhaps the reason I didn’t notice this next sin is that it didn’t look at all like an idol. Of course, anything can become an idol:

all I have to do is set my heart on it and declare, “Without this I can’t be happy!”

Knowing this makes idol hunting easier: whenever I’m unhappy, all I have to do is

look at what disappointed me, and there is an idol to repent of and repudiate.

This one was so obvious, so mundane that I’m embarrassed to even mention it, I’ll tell you more about it was tomorrow.

The seed dies to produce 100 fold

Here’s an ad I plan to put in a local newspaper. Tell me what you think.

Was Charlie Kirk’s death a tragedy?

Yes, but also a blessing, for God has used his premature death to make his influence 10,000 times greater. Before he died, he had 1.3 million followers on Instagram, but one week after his death he had 10 million! People paid attention!

More importantly, his death has led to a new level of introspection worldwide, causing people to ask, “What am I living for right now?”

Former Navy SEAL, Jack Carr said Kirk’s murder “…caused a re-examination for us as a family,” which led them to go to church and re-evaluate their lives in light of the possibility of dying at a young age.

One church in Michigan said a number of young adults who were raised in the church but left for years showed back up as a result of Charlie’s martydom.

An Uber driver commented, “Man, that thing that happened to Charlie, it woke me up. I’m getting baptized this Sunday.”

Another observer said, “People are coming hungry, wanting to connect with God. There’s no playing games anymore. It feels like we’re in a real moment, an awakening.”

What about you? Any spiritual movement in your life? Try going to a good Bible teaching church and learn about the meaning of life, the Love of Christ and how to have eternal life.

Using Freedom well

Final on being set free.

By setting me free, You,  Lord are also showing me your inexorable power and inviting me to join you in your work.

You are setting me free from working too hard and are leading me into working smart,

away from doing my own thing and into joining you through prayer, then seeing you bring all to pass.

Prayer is your idea, and it is part of bringing freedom.

It is your invitation for us to join you in your great work.

It is a powerful means of being transformed by you.

It is tapping into your strength, your wisdom, your goodness, your desires,

And it is having of this flow in, through and out of us to those around us.

In providing this broad and beautiful freedom, you are moving me mightily towards living like Asaph who,

after repenting of his selfishness and self-pity, could say,

“Whom have I in heaven but you

and earth has nothing I desire besides you.

My flesh and my heart may fail,

but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Ps. 73:25,26).

So let us join God with the power He offers us in prayer,

partnering with Him to bring His great plans to pass.

Prayer is partnering with the might of the infinite, all-powerful One. A great privilege!

Th most valuable thing

Proverbs 16:16  “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!”

Looking back over my 79 years, there is one discipline that stands out as the most important one in my life.

It is the primary way to get wisdom.
It is also the one that has demanded the most discipline.
And, unfortunately, it is not a discipline that is practiced much in our society today.

What is this discipline? It is memorizing and meditating on Scripture. This is powerful for several reasons.
First it is practically taking up the Sword of the Spirit in a way that I will always have it with me.
Second, I can now easily think God’s thoughts, which are very different than mine!
Third, as I pray through what I’ve memorized, new and deepf truths emerge. It is a way to powerfully partner with the Holy Spirit.
Fourth, the things I’ve memorized pop up in my prayers for others, which means God will certainly hear and answer them.
Fifth, out of this disciple flows much good. All my sermons, illustrations, teaching and books have come out of what I’ve memorize.
It is work. But, as someone said, it is like eating an elephant, just take one bite at a time.
So, with commitment to a simple system, it is not that hard:
Pick a passage
(for instance, Psalm 1, or 23 or 62)
Memorize one verse a day,
reviewing the verses from the previous days.
After you have 10 or so verses down,
take a week to recite them every day as a prayer.
If you persist in doing that, in a short time you can memorize a whole chapter, then go on  to doing a book!
And become the happy owner of wisdom.

Freedom to Surf

More Freedom from and in Jesus:

You are setting my heart free from

fear,

from bondage to selfishness,

from lust,

from anger,

frustration

and negative thinking.

You have set my feet free from the shackles of Satan that led me

to shuffle down the path of sin,

to choose what is destructive,

to react with violent, knee jerk negatives.

Now I can run free in the path of goodness,

my feet unbound,

my legs strengthened by your Spirit,

my eyes opened by the light of your Word,

my soul ready to surf the waves of  life.

You are setting me free from the anxiety and fear expressed in my hot anger

when things around me are out of my control,

when I get lost on a trip,

when people fail to follow through,

when I feel like a fool.

You are setting me free with the knowledge that

in you I am secure,

that you are my Shepherd,

you are my King,

that you are taking me to and through whatever you know is best.

In you I am significant and can rest in this, no matter how I may act, feel or fail.

Help me to follow you every day, living in the light of your love and given freedom.

Light Days

“I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free.”  Psalm 119:32

Praise be to you, my Lord and my God,

for you have set my heart free,

free from the rule of Satan,

free from the power of self,

free from the chains of sin—

As your child I can actually make choices now

because you have brought me

out of the kingdom of darkness

into the Kingdom of Light.

It is true that, “The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble” (Pro. 4:19).

I have been there and done my  share of stumbling.

But now You have set me free from a life of fumbling in the dark, bringing me out into a life of light.

And You, Lord Jesus, are the light of life and have caused the light of salvation to shine deeply into my heart.

You have invited me to walk on the path of the righteous,

illuminated by your Word,

bringing me ever more into the full light of your day.

Now in your grace I can choose the shining way of Truth revealed by your Word and your Spirit.

Help me today to consistently walk in the light, doing what I know to be right,  that I may honor you.

Suffering is good

“He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.” Psalm 18:16,17

Life is unpredictable. We never know what will come: an easy, comfortable day, or one with an accident, sickness or disturbing news.

Our culture teaches us that comfort is of the highest value, and that anything that disturbs our comfort is bad.

Not so in Scripture. What is truly bad is what harms us spiritually, not what makes us uncomfortable.

What disturbs our comfort may be the most helpful thing in our lives for growth and deepening.

The question each of us must face is: what is my theology of suffering? The following is an example of this.

It was written by a 16-year-old girl, who grew up in the Middle East, struggling to adjust to a new culture (America),

where she experienced loneliness and Christian acquaintances who aren’t interested in spiritual things.

She wrote, “I think that God allows difficulty and suffering into our lives to teach us about Him and strengthen our faith and our trust in Him.

If we never faced suffering, it would be hard for us to see the depth of His love and appreciate how beautiful He truly is—just like we don’t truly appreciate the light until we see darkness.

“It also teaches us that contentment isn’t based on circumstances. If I were happy and cheerful all the time because nothing ever went wrong for me,

I would never learn the true meaning of being thankful. Nor would my worship and praise be as sincere.

“Going through trials helps us, even forces us to grow. Through my loneliness, I have learned more and more what a wonderful friend I have in Jesus.”

Lots of wisdom from such a young girl. What about us? What’s your philosophy  and theology  of suffering?

Exalted God

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” Psalm 46:10,11

I turn my eyes to you and praise you, Lord God: for you are

my Triune,

Eternal,

Personal and Holy God—

utterly other,

entirely independent,

sincerely sinless

and incomprehensibly complex.

You created me,

chose me,

cleansed me,

claimed me as your child, commissioned me to special service,

and I stand before you,

dearly loved,

delighted in,

deeply cared for,

doted on,

and positively dependent on you.

What a wonder! Especially in the light of what I actually deserve as a sinner,

condemnation,

punishment,

eternal separation,

failure,

suffering,

hopelessness,

despair,

death and hell.

But your great and marvelous gracepours continually into our lives,

bringing undeserved forgiveness, gracious cleansing,

ongoing transformation,

needed strengthening,

clear guidance,

great goodness,

positive power

and wide wisdom.

We are saved by grace, sealed by grace, sanctified by grace, strengthened by grace,

and in you, Lord Jesus, we are safe, for you are the Most High, you are the Almighty,

you are the undefeated and undefeatable One. In you we can rest. Glory be to your Name!
