Lilly Pads and Sin

A story taken from chapter 15 of the book “EQUIPPED!”
Dave pulled into the driveway and parked. He was looking forward to his lesson with Jack, but when he knocked on the door, there was no response. So, he went around to the back of the house, walked down toward the pond, and found Jack standing knee deep in the water, pulling up lily pads.
“Good morning!” Dave called, and Jack waved a muddy hand. “I’ll be up in a few minutes; just let me finish with this patch,” he called.
Dave watched Jack reach down deep into the water with both hands, feel around for a bit, then pull up a long dark root. With it came several lily pads and flowers, all tied together by the tuber. Jack then threw them way up on the bank.
Pulling up the last bunch with its roots, Jack waded to the shore and dropped it on the bank. As Jack rinsed the mud off his hands at the edge of the pond, Dave asked, “Why don’t you just pull off the pads and flowers instead of messing with those ugly, muddy roots?”
“Because lily pads are like sin,” answered Jack. He paused, enjoying Dave’s look of bewilderment. “Just like sin, lily pads are attractive to look at: beautiful, graceful white flowers floating among lovely green leaves. But they are destructive. If left unchecked, lily pads will fill the whole pond, choking out other plants and animals. And under those beautiful flowers and leaves hide ugly things: slime, bloodsuckers, worms and snakes, to name a few!”
Jack leaned down and picked up one of the roots he’d thrown up on the bank. He held it up, a dark, gnarled, muddy tuber with long, white ugly stringers hanging from one side, and on the other the slime-covered stems ending in leaves and flowers.
“Look at this. Like the root of sin, it’s ugly. See what it’s done to my hands?” Jack held up his free hand, stained a dark purple from the roots. “The last time I did this, one of my fingernails got infected from working with these. And smell this!” He held the root up toward Dave’s nose. Dave pulled back as the odor of rotting mud and slime assailed his nostrils.
“Just like the stench of sin uncovered,” said Jack, throwing the root back on the ground. “And like sin, unless you remove it far from where it was growing, it will re-root and grow again. That’s why I’ve thrown these way up on the bank where there is no moisture to help them stay alive.”
“Look at this.” Jack held up a stem growing from the root; it was coiled up like a telephone cord. “This young stem was below the surface, slowly straightening out to bring its leaf to the surface. If I’d just picked off the leaves and flowers I could see, within a short time this young leaf would have been up on the surface to replace them, keeping the plant healthy and strong.”
Dave stood thinking on what Jack had said. “It’s like confessing in layers, isn’t it?” he said. “If you only get rid of the pads and flowers, not the stem, the shoots and the root, it’s going to grow right back!”
“Good application,” said Jack as he turned and walked up to toward the shed, where he turned on the hose to wash the mud off his hands and bare feet. “Confession in layers is the only effective way to root sin out of our lives. And as you read chapter 16 [in “EQUIPPED!”], you’ll see how to apply this to a very specific and significant area of your life.”

Psalm 25:21-22

You only, Lord God, are my mighty Shield, my high Fortress, my powerful Defender, standing firm against the attacks of the enemy. You are my God, my great Rock in whom I take refuge, my Protector, the Provider of my salvation and my Stronghold. “I call to you, O Lord, who are worthy to be praised and so I am saved from my enemies!” (Ps. 18:16-19).]

Psalm 25:21 “May integrity and uprightness protect me,”

[I praise you, Lord Jesus, for the integrity and uprightness of your character and that you have imputed these to us, your children. Help me to live in your integrity (doing what I say I believe) and in your uprightness (obeying what you say is right) so I can give you honor and glory in all.

“because my hope is in you.”

Praise you that I can do what is difficult and unnatural (like offering the sacrifice of thanksgiving in the midst of trouble), because my hope is in you alone. In you there is the certainty of help, guidance, and protection.]

Psalm 25:22 “Redeem Israel, O God, from all their troubles!”

[Praise you, O God, for your great act of redemption in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In this you have provided salvation for all in all our troubles.

I pray that you will save me from my present troubles, Lord. Help me in the midst of them to act in wisdom and obedience to you and your Word. I praise you now for how you are going to help me today. Amen.

Psalm 25:19-20

Psalm 25:19 “See how my enemies have increased and how fiercely they hate me!”
[Satan, who is the great angry dragon as in the picture below, is always after me, seeking to trap me, to trip me up, even to take me out–if you, Lord, gave permission. I am too weak to stand against him and the people he uses.

But I praise you that you are very aware of my situation and are protecting me moment by moment in your great Power. As your Word says, “The angel of the Lord camps around those who fear Him and delivers them” (Ps. 34:7).]
Psalm 25:20 “Guard my life and rescue me; let me not be put to shame,”
[Every day I must appeal to you, Lord Jesus, to rescue me from my powerful enemies, from my foes who are too strong for me. Thank you that, instead of shame, you offer us honor–the honor of being your children, of belonging to your Kingdom, of joining you in your work, of keeping on the armor and standing against the enemy, and of living with and for you.]
“for I take refuge in you.”
[This is my part, I must flee to you, my High Tower, my Rock of Salvation, instead of trusting in myself. I do this by recognizing my weakness and need, and offering praise and thanksgiving for whatever comes, asking for your help and obeying what I know to be true.
Help me today, Lord, to consistently take refuge in you, keeping on the armor, under girding all by prayer and doing what I know to be right.

Juneau, Alaska

Chapter 15 Job hunting in Juneau
The next day I was back on the Ketchikan ferry landing, heading to Juneau, the capital of Alaska. Built on the flatlands between the sea and glacier-filled mountains, Juneau has only sea roads leading to it. We arrived at 4 in the morning so I drove to the first gas station and hung out there until it got more light and the rain stopped.

I followed my usual pattern of buying eggs and bacon, then finding a camp ground to cook myself some good breakfast. But since the weather was constantly drizzly, I decided to find somewhere to sleep indoors. The tourist information office pointed me to a youth hostel where I was assigned a bed. I could leave my valuables there while I went to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) headquarters to see about a job.

It was not hard to find the BIA building in such a small city where the government had a big presence. The receptionist at the entrance directed me to the correct floor. I walked down the hall, looking for room number ten, and having found it, knocked on the door and went in. There were a number of people working at their desks. One looked up, “Can I help you?”

“Yes, I said. “In July I sent in my application to the BIA for a teaching job and I’m here to start.”

“Really?” said the man. “Give me your name and let me look up your file.”

He came back in a few minutes later. “We’ve got no record of it here. We’ll probably have to get it from our headquarters in New Mexico. It may take a few days. Check back with us in a week.” He paused, then asked, “Where will you stay?”

“I have a bed at the youth hostel in town.”

“If you’d like, you can stay at a cabin I have out of town. It’s a bit of a walk from the parking area, but it’s a pleasant place.”

“Wow, that would be great!” I said.

The man gave me directions and the key. Then he added, “One note of caution, the path to the cabin has berry bushes along both sides. Make sure you sing and whistle on the way to the cabin to warn any bears that may be feeding there!” He also gave me a package of moose meat to cook up. Pretty nice! Another touch from God.

The next day I spent in town, visiting a museum, then riding out to the big glacier outside the town where I had another good meal of eggs and bacon.

I also found out where there was a good Bible church and went there on Sunday for the service. A young couple invited me home for lunch after hearing about my plans. They had been BIA teachers in a village and told me some of their experiences.

They also gave me some significant advice. “There usually isn’t a lot of reading material in the villages. It would be good for you to join a book club so you can get a good book each month,” the husband told me.

He handed me a paper, “Here is an application form for Word Book Club. As soon as you know where you will be, send this in.”

I took the form gladly, but had no idea how important, how life-saving and life changing this advice would prove to be.

On Monday I went to look for a temporary job and got hired as a carpenter. Fortunately it was rough carpentry as that was as much as I was capable of.

After a couple of days I decided to go back to the BIA office and see if they’d made any progress with my application.

“Are we glad to see you!” exclaimed the owner of the cabin. “We’ve been looking for you, even had announcements on the radio for you to come.

“There is a teaching position that desperately needs to be filled. It’s in an Eskimo village on St. Lawrence Island,”

“Sure, why not?” I said, “I want to teach and they need me. that’s enough.”

Arrangements were made for me to fly to Anchorage two days later. I immediately went to the local motorcycle shop to see if they wanted to buy my bike. The owner offered me a reasonable price and we made a deal on the spot. Another Jesus sighting.

The Wonder of our God

“I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Psalm 18:1,2

Thank you, O God, for the opportunity to praise you in and for whatever comes, to trust you to carry me through. I can do this because you are:
• The Lord God,
• Triune Ruler,
• Eternal King,
• Unchanging Sovereign,
• Undefeated Commander,
• Wise Judge,
• All-Powerful Leader,
• Mighty Shepherd,
• Merciful Savior,
• All-knowing Guide,
• Unshakable Rock,
• Safe and High Tower,
• Our Ever-present Salvation.

To you, O Great One, belongs praise and honor, glory and strength. To you belongs awe, amazement, reverence and surrender. To you belongs fear, denial of self and taking up of our cross daily. We can submit to you because:
• You know what is right,
• You know what is best,
• You know beyond the moment,
• You know all that will be.
Therefore:
• You are the One to be trusted,
• You are the One to be honored,
• You are the One to be obeyed.
As I look at today, it is wonderful to know that you are going to work all things out for good, leading me through the maze of events, the succeeding challenges and adventures and the battle against the evil one. In all I can rest in you, in your goodness, in your love and in your power.

Prayer: “Today may you be honored in my life, in my thoughts, in my motives, in my confession, in my transparency before you. May you be glorified by my trusting you, not myself. May you be honored in my praise, in my actions, in my relationships, in my eating, in my work.

Joy

Thank you, Lord, that, even though it is dark and gloomy out today, within me is your light, your Sonshine to warm and cheer me.
I praise you that you want us to have joy: rich, deep, abiding, refreshing and empowering joy. The flow of this joy is dependent on you, and therefore is fully independent of circumstances, feelings, suffering, persecution, weakness or difficulties.
However, the acceptance of such joy into our lives is dependent on us: “May the God of hope fill you will all joy and peace AS YOU TRUST IN HIM…” (Rom. 15:13).
This joy is like a beam of light shining into a dark room through a hole in a wall; if we stand before it, we are enlightened, warmed and encouraged. If we move away from it, we may see it, but it does not touch us.
We have to look away from the darkness of this world and come to you, trusting you to be our Light, our Lord, our Life, and walk in your way. As it says in Proverbs 4:18, “The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining on ever more brightly till the full light of day.”
Then Psalm 86:4 gives us another aspect of receiving joy, “Rejoice the soul of your servant, O Lord, for I lift up my soul to you.” It is that coming into the light, looking to you, Lord, being transparent, open, honest before you, confessing our worries, fears and frustrations to Him, comparing them to Truth and laying them aside as we stand in the warm, healing light of His presence.
This is what Jesus desires for us. In John 15:10,11 He said, “If you keep my commands [don’t worry! Don’t fret! Don’t fear! Trust in me!], you will remain in my love…I have told you this SO THAT MY JOY MAY BE IN YOU and that your joy may be complete [full].” He wants us to be filled with His joy so that we might be light bearers, hope bringers, faith carriers and love givers to all those around us.
If I am negative, worried, fearful, discouraged or complaining, I have stepped away from the light, turned from trusting you, Lord, and will blend into the dark shadows of this corrupt world.
But if I stand in your light, thinking truth, bringing all the sin and weight that entangles me to you, leaving them at the foot of the cross, then I will stand out sharply from the shadows, a flaming torch of hope and joy spilling light and love to all around me.
Lord, help me to live in your light, to rejoice in your goodness, to be filled with joy because I know you, the mighty Creator, the majestic Ruler, the marvelous Shepherd, the magnificent Savior.
Help me, Lord God, to let go of the temporary that entangles and tramples my soul; to hold on to the truth that frees, enlightens, equips and brings joy; and help me then to rise above whatever comes, soaring on the wings of truth, borne up by the shining feathers of your grace and goodness.
Help me to move forward in your love and light today, drawing ever closer to you so that your joy may fill me to overflowing and bring light and life to all those around me.

More on running in the path of God

You are setting me free, Lord Jesus,  from the fear of man, cutting the emotional ties to what others think or value or want. You have established a new connection from your heart to mine. You have given me the knowledge of your presence and a desire to obey you rather than my twisted self-centered doubts and the desires and of those around me.

You are setting me free from impatience helping me to grasp that your plans are unfolding at the right pace; your time table cannot be thwarted; things will come to pass at the optimum time.

You are setting me free from being tied to what I can see. You have opened my eyes to the eternal, to the supernatural, to the working of your hand in all around me. God sightings come often.

You are setting me free from pride, showing me how small, how feeble, how powerless, how sinful I am in myself. You are revealing the depth of the depravity of my natural man and the height of the holiness you have given your children.

You are also showing me your inexorable power and inviting me to join you in your work. You are setting me free from working too hard and are leading me into working smart, away from doing my own thing and into joining you through prayer and seeing you bring all to pass.

Prayer is your idea and part of bringing freedom. It is your invitation for us to join you in your great work. It is a powerful means of being transformed by you. It is tapping into your strength, your wisdom, your goodness, your desires and having them flow in, through and out of us to those around us.

In providing this broad and beautiful freedom, you are moving me mightily towards living like Asaph who, after repenting of his selfishness and self-pity, could say, “Whom have I in heaven but you and earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Ps. 73:25,26).

Eternal praise be to you, O Lord, for you have truly, powerfully, continually, eternally set my heart free!

To vote or not?

Well, I’ve gotten quite a lot of response to my post on voting, most of it positive. I was informed of an article by John Piper urging Christians not to vote, and then and answering article by respected theologian Wayne Grudem. Take a look at it as it is very informative, wise and biblical. If you like it, post it on your Facebook page. You will probably have to copy and past this in your browser.

Running in God’s Paths

I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free.” Psalm 119:32

Praise be to you, my Lord and my God, for you have set my heart free, free from the rule of Satan, free from the power of self, free from the chains of sin—as your child I can actually make choices now because you have brought me out of the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Light.

“The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble” (Pro. 4:19). You have set me free from a life of fumbling and stumbling in the dark, bringing me out into a life of light. You, Lord Jesus, are the light of life and have caused the light of salvation to shine deeply into my heart. You have invited me to walk on the path of the righteous, illuminated by your Word, bringing me ever more into the full light of your day. Now in your grace I can choose the shining way of Truth revealed by your Word and your Spirit.

You are setting my heart free from fear, from bondage to selfishness, from lust, from anger, frustration and negative thinking. You have set my feet free from the shackles of Satan that led me to shuffle down the path of sin, to choose what is destructive, to react with violent, knee jerk negatives.

Now I can run free in the path of goodness, my feet unbound, my legs strengthened by your Spirit, my eyes opened by the light of your Word, my soul ready to soar.

You are setting me free from the anxiety and fear expressed in my hot anger when things around me are out of my control, when I get lost on a trip, when people fail to follow through, when I feel like a fool.

You are setting me free with the knowledge that in you I am secure, that you are my Shepherd, you are my King, that you are taking me to and through whatever you know is best. In you I am significant and can rest in this no matter how I may act, feel or fail.

Prayer: “ Help me, Lord, to run freely in the paths of your commandments, in the light of your Truth, in the joy of your presence, that I may give you glory today. Amen”

vote?

Some Christians I know have said they are not going to vote because they don’t like the candidates. Here are some things to consider on voting.
Men and women in the military have died fighting for us to have the right to vote; failure to do so is dishonoring to them.
If we don’t vote we have essentially voted for the winner. This is what happened in 2018 when millions of evangelicals didn’t vote and as a result those who are for infanticide, higher taxes and violence took control of congress.
Voting is an opportunity to influence what happens on a local, state and national level. This year we will be voting for state legislators and senators and well as a national congressman. One side is pushing abortion, curtailing home schooling and more taxes. If that’s what you want, then don’t vote.
Don’t think about personalities, but think about the candidate stands for: is it abortion, curtailing religious freedom, high taxes, rioting, ending the oil industry? If that’s not what you want, then vote, and vote for the opposite.
Personally, I am voting not for a person but for:
Freedom of religion
Freedom of speech
Freedom to bear arms
Freedom of Law and order
Freedom of life (Pro-life)
Better economy
Common sense
Good international policy (peace for Israel)
