The Dawn Bringer Psalm 33:10

Psalm 33:10 “The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.”

[You, O Lord God, rule. You are absolutely Sovereign. You, as the star Breather, the galaxy Former, the planet Placer, the moon Maker, the earth Spinner and the dawn Bringer are in charge. In darkness you bring light. You are great beyond comprehension and mighty beyond imagination.

You see all that the devil, demons and dominions are planning to do and, in your might, munificence and majesty, thwart the purposes that contravene your great goals.

You frustrate the destructive desire of humans for selfish independence; you prevent us from reaching true joy and peace apart from you; you hold back the tide of evil that would keep people from deciding for you; and what you do allow, you will use for good in the lives those involved.

Praise be to you for your greatness, Lord, for your wisdom, your power, your love and faithfulness–all of which are continually at work to transform the evil of men into the goodness of God.]

Help me to walk with you, to cooperate with you, joining you in your great plans.

Amazing Creator Psalm 33:8-9

Psalm 33:8 “Let all the earth fear the LORD;”

[Your might, your power, your dominion, your wisdom and your creation are all reasons to tremble before you, to bow in surrender to the Almighty, All-powerful, All-knowing, All-wise One. You are THE One to be feared, respected and obeyed–not puny man or perverted Satan, who is far more powerful than us, but immensely weaker than you.]

“let all the people of the world revere him.”

[The wonder of your creation–the beauty, the wisdom, the imagination, the intricacy, the variety, the vastness and the very attention to detail in all you have made–lead us to bow before you in awe, in wonder, in reverence at such power, such creativity, such greatness, such goodness, such beauty and such majesty. You alone are worthy of worship, O Lord God.]

Psalm 33:9 “For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.”

[With such ease you made all, with such finality you arranged everything. All creation obeyed you and even in its present twisted, fallen state, the universe follows the laws of physics you established. Your wisdom, your order, your goodness are visible to all who care to see–for what you made reveals your amazing, full-orbed character.

May this increasing knowledge of how great you are lead us to further trust, further surrender, further rest and ongoing praise.]

Wise Foresight and Provision

Psalm 33:7 “He gathers the waters of the sea into jars;”

[The vast oceans are but a small drop to you, Lord, easily channeled into the place prepared, kept there in store for your plans and the good of all. With it you regulate the climate, provide food, transportation for ships and beauty.]

“he puts the deep into storehouses.”

[You, Lord God, prepared all that mankind would need for life and stored it up:

–minerals for health (zinc, magnesium, selenium),

–metals for help (iron, titanium, aluminum),

–means for heat and power  (coal, oil, atomic energy) and

— measures for money (gold, silver, precious stones).

–multiple harvests for food.

You knew what would be needed and gave it all, putting it where men could find it. You are the great, good and wise Planner and Provider.]

Praise you that you  know the future, you know our needs and you know how to provide them. Help us to trust you in your greatness, goodness and power.

Star Bright Psalm 33:6b

“their starry host by the breath of his mouth.” Psalm 33:6b

[You, Lord Jesus, are the Star Breather, exhaling stars great and small, each burning at incredibly high temperatures, giving out light and heat to all around them. Then you ushered them into their proper places, into galaxies, and clusters of galaxies, placing them purposefully in your universe.

You breathed billions of stars, placed them billions of light years apart, yet you can measure this all with the span of your hand. The closest star to our solar system is Alfa Centori. If we could travel at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second—meaning we could circle the earth 7 times in a scond!), we would travel 1 week, then 1 month, then 1 year, and be only a quarter of the way there! We would have to travel 4.5 years to reach that star, longer than it takes for a high school education!

Many of the “stars” we see at night are actually whole galaxies made up of billions of stars. Some of the stars in these galaxies are 10,000 times larger than our sun—so large they contradict the know laws of physics! Our God is great beyond our grasp, powerful beyond our perception, mighty beyond all we can imagine.

Yes, you, O Lord God, the majestic and mighty One, the wise and good One, the Creator God, you are worthy of worship and love, worthy of awe and fear, worthy of obedience by all your creatures.

May I walk in wonder before you today, living in your light of your presence, serving you in the shadow of your splendor.]

Whose in control? Psalm 33:6

Psalm 33:6 “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made,”

[How powerful you are, Lord, able to create through just speaking. Praise you, Lord Jesus, that you, as the Living Word, created all that there is: “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible….” (Col. 1:16).

Your might is immeasurable, your strength is stupendous, your power is perpetual–greater than the width and breadth of the known heavens. Scientists tell us that the diameter of the known universe is 24 billion light years, a number way beyond anything a human being can comprehend, yet you fill all of it with your presence. You power is greater than we will ever comprehend, for you are infinite in every way. We stand in awe of you!]

Therefore we should trust our tiny lives to you. If you can  manage to orchestrate the universe, you and deal with the details of ours. But sometimes we forget in our busy lives and we seek to control the uncontrollable. You just wait patiently for us to come to our senses and surrender to your wisdom, power and grace.

Remind us Lord when we look in the wrong places for peace, safety and protection, looking for these  in our own power. Instead help us to rejoice in our weakness and rest in you goodness.

God’s Way

Psalm 1 is one of  my favorites, giving very clear direction on how to be successful as God defines it. It tells what to avoid and what to do, leading to “and whatever he does will prosper.”

What are these directions?

1 Avoid the counsel of  the ungodly, including our own hearts!

  1. Don’t stand in the way of sinners, watching and envying them.
  2. Don’t sit in the seat of the scornful, noting, rejecting our tendency to be critical

The positive ones:

  1. Delight in God’s Word
  2. Meditate on it day and night.

I am so thankful for my mentor who taught me early on about memorizing and meditating on Scripture. And, following his advice, the first one I memorized was Psalm 1!

So what are the results of avoiding the 3 negatives and implementing the 2 positives?

  1. We will be able to consistently draw on the water of the Word.
  2. No matter what comes, our leaves will stay green and fresh.
  3. We will bear fruit when it is needed: the fruit of the Spirit, the fruit of our lips, the sacrifice of thanksgiving, the fruit of good works, the fruit of influencing others to believe
  4. And whatever we do in implementing all the above will prosper.

One place where the “whatever you do will prosper” showed up in our boys. We made plenty of mistakes in our parenting, but in spite of this, God worked in their lives and brought them to good places. We cannot take credit for this outcome, except for obeying Psalm 1 and seeing God fulfill his promises. We are thankful.

Does God Hear?

Some thoughts from Ray Comfort on prayer

I often hear people say they feel like God isn’t listening to their prayers. The reality is He may not be listening! There are certain conditions when we pray. God is omniscient, so of course He hears everything. But scripture says sometimes He doesn’t take notice.

If we have an iniquity in our hearts He will not take notice. Sin separates Him from listening to us. If we think God isn’t hearing our prayers, first we need to look at our lives and see where we are disobeying Him. Then we need to confess and forsake our sins.

Second, we need to have faith in our hearts. We make Him a liar if we don’t believe Him. God is the One who gives us faith; are we nurturing it by reading the Word, noting our God-sightings, remembering how He has helped us in the past.

Our whole life is based on faith. If we don’t trust our spouse, we will ruin  our marriage. If we don’t trust our boss, we’ll get fired from our job. We trust the doctor when he gives us pills. We trust the pilot who takes us across the country.

If we trust humans how much more should we trust God who cannot lie. We must repent of unbelief, surrender, “Lord, I give you my will and take yours in its place.”

If we are living in the light, walking in trust means God will hear and answer our prayers in whatever way He knows is best!

Love Triumphs Psalm 33:4,5

Psalm 33:4 “For the word of the LORD is right and true;”

[Praise you, Lord God, that your Word is flawlessly correct, fully trustable, totally right and true. Praise you for speaking it, preserving it, presenting it to us so we can read it, study it and memorize it, learning to think your thoughts.]

“he is faithful in all he does.”

[Faithfulness is your character! You tie yourself to your qualities, never straying outside the boundaries you have set: you are always good, always wise, always helpful, always present, always protecting, always powerful, always patient. You are faithful to the end: completely, entirely, purely, perfectly faithful. Therefore, you are the One to be trusted.]

Psalm 33:5 “The LORD loves righteousness and justice;”

[Your love, O Lord, is so comprehensive and wide, encompassing all that is good. Praise you that you are passionate about righteousness and do only what is correct and pure and good. Thank you that you love justice and will always judge sin, never condone evil. So, there is hope for a positive future, for an end to evil and for a Heaven where there is only goodness.

“the earth is full of his unfailing love.”

[Praise you, Lord, that in your great love you are merciful. If you interacted with us only on the basis of righteousness and justice, we would be blown away in a moment, sent into an eternity separated far from you and all that you are.

But in you, Righteousness and Justice are accompanied by Love. Mercy triumphs over Justice because you are Love itself, providing a way for forgiveness, even though it cost you greatly, and continues to bring you pain and suffering as unbelievers reject you and we believers often choose to live in rebellion and unbelief.

Opposites come together in Him

You, O God, are so kind, so gracious, so giving when we deserve the opposite. You are full of mercy and truth—two seemingly contradictive opposites. Truth would demand punishment, banishment and total rejection of sinners.

Mercy, however, at great cost to you, brings forgiveness, reconciliation, transformation, adoption and acceptance–all provided in grace and love. You do not accept us reluctantly, but with warmth, enthusiasm and rejoicing, and we stand in your presence dearly loved, deeply cared for, doted on and delighted in!

You, O Elohim, are the wonderful, Triune God whose love and compassion, grace and patience, mercy and goodness are far beyond what we can comprehend. Glory be to you, honor be to you, exaltation be to you forever and ever.

Prayer: “Lord, help me today to live in the light of your Love, growing in my grasp of who I am in you: a child of the King, a sibling of the Lord Jesus, a partner in your plans. Help me to reject the view of the world, that I am of no importance, and instead live in the truth of your Word, that in you I am chosen, holy and dearly loved. Amen.”

The Power of Meditation

“Blessed is the man who delights in God’s Word, meditating on it day and night.” Psalm 1.

It never fails to amaze me how the Word can continue to have a keen cutting edge in our lives, even after we’ve gone over and over a passage and it seems to have gotten dull. But it’s our own perception that has become dull, not the Word. God uses difficulties to sharpen both our perception and our appetite for the Word.

In confronting the problems God allows into my life, I like to use what I call “God’s medicine chest”, a set of chapters dealing with specific topics. Some of these are:

  • Psalm 1 –God’s road to success.
  • Psalm 23 –God’s shepherding: provision and protection.
  • Psalm 37 –Dealing with difficult people.
  • James 1 –Wisdom and dealing with sin.
  • James 4 –War and peace.
  • John 15 –Growth.
  • Romans 12 –Guidance.
  • 1 Thessalonians 4 –A Pure Life.
  • Hebrews 12:1-17 –Difficulties: why and what to do with them.
  • 1 Corinthians 13 –God’s Love, my love.
  • Colossians 3 –Transforming our thoughts.

I am in the process of rememorizing and meditating some of these, spending a week or so on each one. Such wonderful insights come from spending this time of soaking in the Word

While we were living overseas there was a person of authority who has been opposing our work. At first I prayed  like David asking for her downfall.

But, while meditating on Romans 12 verse 14 jumped out, “Bless them that persecute you, bless them and curse not!”  So, instead of praying for her downfall, I prayed for her promotion, up and out of the way!. That set me free from frustration. Now it was in God’s hands. To meditate on the Word in the midst of such problems is certainly profitable, freeing  and joy-producing.

Prayer: “Lord, help me to consistently meditate on your Word, thinking your thoughts, praying your prayers, doing your work in your way.
