The path leading upward

Psalm 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight,”

Yes, Lord, may both my inner and outer speech please you. Lord, bring the continual transformation of my heart so I will please you in my thought life, so my public life may honor you before others, remembering that out of the heart flow the words of my mouth.

May I follow through on your command, Lord Jesus: “If any man  would be  my disciple, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me.”

May my impatience, selfishness, pride and ambition be replaced with patience, Christ-centeredness, humility and contentment.

Help me to consistently meditate on your Word, to think your thoughts, to respond with your wisdom and to speak your Truth. And may you be greatly pleased with that obedience growing in my being, the result of your good work.]

Equipped for Life

Psalm 19:13 “Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me.”

[This is where I am fully responsible and where I very much need your grace, your help and guidance, Lord Jesus, my great Shepherd. I thank you that you have prepared me for this struggle, as it says in 2 Peter 1:3, “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” I have to learn to take up and use what you have provided, such as the fruit of the Spirit, the armor of God, grace, heavenly wisdom and the Word, to name a few.

Praise you for the continual upward progress of your transformational work in us, which I see daily within and without, as the Holy Spirit warns me and gives conviction, insight and protection. You make it possible to stand against the pressures, such as worry, fear, selfishness and impatience, that push me towards personal sin. As I obey, you are making supernatural responses (praise, denying self, patience and mercy) more “natural” for me.

You are at work: you are my Rock, my Fortress, my Deliverer, my Shield, my Strength, my Stronghold. In you alone is the needed help in the battle with sin, self and Satan. With you alone is there hope, power and victory.]

“Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.”

[Only in you, Lord, only in you is there the possibility of being blameless, without reproach, innocent of great sin. Praise be to you for your unwarranted desire to help, your unearned love, your undeserved grace.

You are marvelous in your Might, great in your Grace and wonderful in your Wisdom as you usher us farther up and further into the freedom, growth and goodness of your Kingdom. Glory be to you. Help us today to follow you wholeheartedly in this journey into the light of transformation.]

Hidden Truth

Psalm 19:12 “Who can discern his errors?”

[My inner being, below my consciousness, is largely inscrutable and opaque to me. In there I unknowingly sin with wrong motives, wrong attitudes and wrong desires.

These sins are from my flesh, from the inherited residue of original sin from past generations, from the subtle working of the devil, from input from the world–and from my giving in to them sometimes willfully. Sometimes unknowingly.

These sins are there—but their penalty has been paid in Christ’s death and resurrection, praise be to you. So we can pray, along with David, “Forgive my hidden faults” and know that we are forgiven.

As I spend time in worship (giving you, Lord, honor for who you are), you are slowly increasing the depth of understanding of what’s in my inner being–showing me more and more of these hidden faults. Then I can knowingly confess and reject them and instead obey you in these areas.

Praise you for your persistent, patient and powerful work in my life.]

Wonderful Warnings

Psalm 19:11 “By them [The ordinances of the LORD] is your servant warned;”

[The ordinances of the LORD reveal danger, show us how to avoid evil and protect us from our own wrong desires. We must pay attention to your warnings, Lord, for it is up to us to obey what you have revealed.]As it says in Psalm 37:1-3, Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”  Such clear commands, such protection, if we will heed it.

“in keeping them there is great reward.”

[Not just preservation from danger and disaster, but immense rewards come from obeying your commands, Lord. These rewards are both for now and forever: love, peace, joy, strength, wisdom, grace, love, positive relationships, fulfilling significance and purpose, security both for today and for eternity, continual growth–and many others, an ongoing stream of your goodness being poured out on your children who love you with all their heart and strength, mind and soul.]

Today, Lord, help me fear you, to care deeply about what you think in all my decisions. Guide me in doing what will last forever, making plans based upon your perfect and pristine Word, rather than on my own feeble and faulty reasoning.

May I wholeheartedly, consistently, confidently, humbly exalt and obey your Word in every area, every situation, every thought of my life so that I may constantly give you an ongoing flow of glory and honor, you, O Lord Jesus, my Shepherd and King.

Security and Joy

Psalm 19:8 “The precepts of the LORD are right,”

[You, Lord, make the lines clear: this is right, that is wrong. And praise you that you do it as much in principles as in particulars, like, “honor your father and mother,” which can be lived out differently in different cultures.

Then you present us with the wisdom to know how to apply these principles in various situations in our lives, giving us guidance in the grey areas. “If any man lacks wisdom, let him ask of God….” (James 1:5)]

“The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.”

[Knowing what is right and wrong brings security, for having clear boundaries lessens the stress of decision making—we never have to struggle about robbing a bank or not! Knowing truth brings joy, one of the pleasures you desire for us to have in growing amounts.

As you, Lord Jesus, said in John 15:11, “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” Joy is there, offered to us for the taking–we just need to take your Word seriously, reject the tendency to complain and choose to live the truth that knowing Jesus is enough for joy.

Such joy does not come from circumstances (as happiness does) but from our relationship with you, which will never be altered from your side–meaning joy is always available, no matter how we may feel.]

Move to Germany 2008

Our plan for our trip to Germany, on the recommendation of friends, was to drive to the Western edge of Greece and take a ferry to Venice. That would eliminate the need to drive through the patchwork of countries that used to be Yugoslavia, which would have been a difficult and time consuming process.

After  two long days of driving on switchback roads through the mountains of Greece, we arrived at the port city and began looking for information on ferries. We found that there was a one leaving the next morning, so we bought tickets.  When we came out of the travel agency, there were four fellows standing around our van, looking in the windows to see what was inside.  That made it clear to us that this was not a safe place. With all the port traffic going in and out of the country, there were plenty opportunities for thieves.  So, I decided to sleep in the van that night to forestall any loss. We got a triple room for Barb, Nat and Abby, while I  crawled onto our air mattress, laid out on top of all our stuff in the van and spent a restless night, listening for thieves who never came.

The next morning we boarded the ferry, taking our air mattresses and sleeping bags up to the passenger deck for the thirty hour trip to Venice.  Although the seats we had were comfortable, and we were able to put down two air mattresses, the next night was a restless one for all of us, what with the continual thump of the ship’s huge engines and a constant stream of people coming and going. When morning came I was more exhausted than the night before—and grouchy. I was not thinking much about praising God, unfortunately.

I was also still working through the trauma of having to leave Turkey to move to Germany, along with all the uncertainty that entailed.  I was glad that Nat was with us to drive much of the next day after the ferry reached Italy. We left the warmth of Venice, made our way up into the Alps, and drove right into a snowstorm. Passing through it, we went down the other side into Germany.  That night we stayed in a clean but frigid guesthouse, had a delicious German breakfast and were off for our last day of travel

On the way we stopped in a beautiful and ancient town called Rottenburg on der Tauber. It had not been bombed in World War II, so was still in its pristine medieval form, complete with a full city wall, tudor-type houses, cobblestone streets and old signs. There were a lot of shops selling things from the Middle Ages, including one that was full of knights’ armor and weapons. It was a reminder of the spiritual warfare we lived with every day, and the need to keep ourselves on the spiritual weapons of Ephesians 6, which God has given us–a reminder to me to give up my complaining and to start praising again.\

In mid-afternoon we arrived in Barbara’s mother’s village. After greeting her, we went on to the little apartment the Lord had provided for us. A Christian friend of Barbara’s who lived in the village had found this place for us, a cozy little apartment up under the roof. The landlady’s daughter-in-law, Gerlinda, turned out to also be a believer, and she was excited to help us get settled.

Normally when you rent an apartment in Germany there is nothing in it beyond the bathroom furnishings: no closets, no lights, no appliances, no kitchen furnishings, no cabinets and no sink, and often no faucets!  That means you have to buy everything and either install it yourself or have it put in.   In our case, however, the Lord went before us and provided everything necessary. The kitchen had all we needed, including a stove and under-the-counter refrigerator. Gerlinda had also collected furniture for us from two older women in the village who were entering a nursing home. So, when we arrived, there were big cabinets in the living room and bedroom, couches, chairs, two tables, an ironing board, a clothes-horse, a fold-out couch for the guest room and even an electric recliner!

We had brought our Turkish rugs, so we only needed to lay them down and move in. The Lord was providing for us in a wonderful way.   Other items were then given to us by Barbara’s relatives: a huge bed from her uncle, a TV and stand from her cousin and some pots and pans from her mother.   Adding a few items of Barbara’s from her childhood, we were fully furnished!   It was the easiest move in we’d ever made. Little did we know God had even more marvelous provisions planned for us.

Making wise the simple

Psalm 19:7b “The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”

[We are all foolish in our natural, fallen selves, especially, Lord, in the light of your deep and wide, full and powerful wisdom. In comparison with you, we are all very simple. Especially in the light of your complexity, your creativity, your designing all aspects of the universe with deep detail and wide wisdom.

Just think of the structure of a cell, as complex as any city, complete with systems of communication, transportation, manufacturing and garbage disposal! And who can understand the power that holds together the positive protons in the nucleus of an atom?   Colossians 1:13 gives us a clue: Jesus “is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Who can know the paths of the stars? Who can know what is right in every situation? Only you, Lord God–and you have graciously revealed a portion of that wisdom with us in your Word.

Praise you for your generosity in sharing some of your deep, wide and powerful thoughts with us! Help us today to admit our simplistic approach to life and to embrace instead your rich, multifaceted wisdom, submitting ourselves to your Way, your Word, your Wonderful love–doing good to our enemies, praying for those who persecute us, blessing those who harm us, giving thanks in all things. May you thus be honored in our lives.]

Perfect Perspective

Psalm 19:7 “The law of the LORD is perfect,”

[You make no mistakes, Lord–what you revealed is completely correct, perfectly presented, totally trustable. Your law is without flaw, without error, without lack. It is THE one thing in this world that we can fully lean on.]

The law of the Lord is perfect, “reviving the soul.”

[To learn your law, to obey your ordinances brings refreshment, growth, joy and strength to our souls; that is, to our minds, our wills and our emotions. Your Word is like an open door, beckoning us into the garden of your delights.

In learning to think your thoughts, our soul is brought more in line with what you originally intended—giving us a tiny taste of pre-fall goodness, a tangible touch of eternity. Praise you for putting it within our grasp by putting perfection within your Word.]

“The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,”

[Your revelations are absolutely right, fully true, totally correct and therefore we can rest in them. Even if people take some verses out of context and twist them to their own purposes, that does not negate the genuine wisdom stored up in your statues for those who handle and understand the Word of God correctly: taking it at face value and in full context.] You show us the right road to follow.

Forgive and Rewrite

Today on my prayer list was a prayer for “forgiving and rewriting.” This, for  me, was a comforting reminder. To forgive is the  highest form  of obedience, often done in teeth-gritting-obedience. But the process of “rewriting” makes it easier. Rewriting means looking at the offense from God’s perspective. The best example  in Scripture is Joseph in the Old Testament. What his brothers did to him, acting out of jealousy, selling him as a slave was basically giving him a death sentence: to work in the fields of Egypt in temperatures of 140 degrees or  more, ensured an early death.

Not only was he sold, but he had to walk hundreds of miles across the hot sands; we are told in the Psalms that he had shackles cutting into his ankles and a metal ring around his neck burning in the brutal heat of the sun. And yet, when Joseph arrived in Egypt, he was not bitter, instead he was pleasant, hardworking and well liked. He had obiously forgiven his brothers and later we learn that he trusted God to have a plan in all this.

The first step of God’s plan was to have Joseph sold to Potiphar, a high ranking man, rather than to a farmer, meaning Joseph was spared an early death in the fields. And you  know the rest of the story: success as a servant; unjustly accused and thrown in jail; interpreting Pharoah’s dream and becoming the Prime Minister of Egypt.

The rewriting of the offenses against Joseph involved his thinking about God, His goodness, wisdom and power. Joseph articulated this to his worried brothers were afraid that Joseph would take revenge on them. He said, “You meant it to me for evil, but God meant it for good, to the saving of many people.” He was thinking about how he saved his family, all the Egyptians and people from the surrounding countries. But it was more than that, for in saving his brother Judah, Joseph opened the way for Jesus our savior to come. So he had a part in saving us!

That teenager sold as a slave could not have known that this would be the outcome of his life (although he had prophetic dreams indicating it), but he trusted God, embraced what came and was ready when new opportunities came.

So, when people sin against us, not only can we forgive them, but we can thank God for this unhappy event, knowing that He is orchestrating something much bigger, much greater, much better. I think of my own disciple in the Middle East turning me into the police and all the fallout from that, resulting in a trial where, amazingly, the prosecuting attorney defended us, outlining the rights we had as Christians, This ushered in a decade of great freedom to share the gospel. Forgiving and rewriting from God’s point of view frees us to join Him in what He’s doing,

And with my present situation, being attacked by my renter, slandered, sued, put under a restraining order, needing to put out large sums of money for an eviction, and in danger of perhaps losing all I own, I can forgive him and this rewrite from God’s perspective. He has a plan for good, unseen at this time, to be revealed at the right moment.  In the meantime I can offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving and wait for my good Heavenly Father to be working behind the scenes to bring the good He plans.

“He who offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving honors me and opens the way that I may show him the salvation of the Lord.” Psalm 54:23

This woman, burned badly by a suicide bomber, has forgiven her attackers and now uses her burns as a way to witness.

Time to Pray

Psalm 19:4b-6 “In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.”

You, Lord, in your wisdom, goodness and might, created the sun, making it exactly the right size, burning at precisely the right temperature. Then you placed the earth in just the right orbit around it, not too far, not too close, providing exactly the right amount of heat, light and energy for carbon-based life. The sun speaks to us of your provision and love, your wisdom and power, the earth of our position in your Kingdom.

When simple observation shows us the exactness and wisdom of your design, with so many factors being preciously what is needed, why do so many not believe? Your Word tells us that they have a veil over their faces, put there by Satan and held there by their sin and selfishness. Only as they turn to you is it taken away (2 Cor. 3:15, 4:3,4). And we pray for this veil to be taken away for those we  share with, for our loved ones.

As we pray, God works, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. We had to pray for my father for 52 years before he was ready to surrender to Christ. Our part is to pray, live a godly life and speak when God gives opportunity. Then seeds planted, watered by prayer, sprout and in the end bear the grain of faith. Are we joining Him?
