After visiting Germany years ago, we drove back to our Middle Eastern country from which we had been expelled. On the drive through Yugoslavia we had two “God sightings.” First, expecting to find plenty of gas stations around a major city, we saw a sign that said, “Next gas 50 kilometers,” but I knew from experience that there were only about 40 kilometers of gas left in my tank! Praising and pressing on,we came to a new gas station 42 kilometers later! Just in time!

Then as evening came, I was hoping, not really praying, for someone to follow on the dark, winding, narrow roads through the mountains. There were no lights, no center line, no guardrails and often fog, making it a difficult drive in the night. As I drove along at dusk, a car waiting beside the road pulled out in front of me and then led us for the next 500 kilometers through the night!

Just think about the wonders God worked to get us there at just the right moment to join our “escort,” who was an excellent driver and obviously knew the road well. Following him saved us much time and stress as we didn’t have to creep slowly along not sure where the next sharp curve would be!

And He followed up on that God sighting, as the following day we prepared to reentered our country, not sure what would happen, since we had been expelled. But there were no problems with customs: no one seemed to know that we had been expelled.

We then made the 13-hour drive to our city, where we received a very warm welcome from the little team we’d left behind. God’s goodness was clear to us all and we praised Him for it. I needed to remember this demonstration of His goodness and power in the events that would soon come.

Prayer: Father, always remind me of how you have helped me in the past so that I will immediately come to you in prayer in each fresh crisis and give you honor through trust and praise before any answer comes. Amen.”

Yahweh, Adonai, Elohim

Continuation of comments on Psalm 34:7 “The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” what it means to fear the Lord as defined in Psalm 34:13,14

“Turn from evil and do good;” Make me aware,Lord, of whenever I am contemplating something evil, like selfishness, lustful thoughts, impatience or resentment. Or thinking and speaking negatively about others instead of blessing them in my mind and words. Help me to repent immediately and choose good instead.
“Seek peace and pursue it.” Help me to have the courage and determination to actively work for peace with all those around me rather than avoiding those who clash with me or refusing to forgive or not wanting to ask forgiveness. Help me to speak words that bring peace instead of venting my feelings and stirring things up.
In response to these truths, Lord, I must resolve to be deeply concerned for what you think. I want to live for you a life worthy of your great Name, with a love growing in knowledge and depth of insight so that I may be able to “discern what is best, and be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness, which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God” (Phil. 1:9-11).
And thank you, LORD, that we can obey you because you are Yahweh, whose glory is in your holiness;
because you are Elohim, whose great power is seen in creation and whose full faithfulness is seen in your promised provision of salvation, symbolized by the rainbow;
because you are Adonai, who is worthy to be obeyed fully and promises to provide completely so we can obey.

Prayer: “I bow before you, O Triune God, Creator and Lord of the universe. I surrender my all to you. Help me to fear you in each decision I make so that you can be glorified in my life today. Amen.”

A Great Plan

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1

Written in 1980

Someone told me that we seldom learn anything once for all in the spiritual realm and I had just experienced this truth. Coming from the Middle East to Germany has been a shock culturally, and I have forgotten at times two important biblical principles.

First, that our “struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world…” (Ephesians 6:12). It is easy to see the people behind the slow bureaucracy here as the problem, instead of the spiritual forces using them!

Second, “…in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Rom. 8:28). This means seeing that delays are things God uses for good. When I forgot these two truths, I fell into the swamp of impatience and self-pity; but the Lord Jesus, in His magnificent patience and splendorous grace, set me back on the right thought paths.

He did this by bringing  Scripture to mind. I am ever grateful that the Lord had me memorize many passages, like  “Give thanks in all things.” (1 thes. 5:18) and “…run with endurance the race that is set before you, looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”(Her. 12:1,2). This are high level thoughts,, ones that transform and I was very glad the Spirit brought them to mind.

Tomorrow, more on how the Lord worked things out.

Unbelievable Heavenly Love

…joyfully give “thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.nFor he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, Col 1:12,13

I praise you, O Lord God, for you, in your greatness, rise far above our ability to comprehend. How could One who hates sin so profoundly, provide, against all human logic, a pardon for your creatures who are so thoroughly evil, rebellious and contrary to you?

Yet, in your wonderful, rich grace you made the way, providing reconciliation, crushing your Son without mercy that mercy might flow to your enemies. You did this because you are faithful to your character: you are Light, you are Life, you are Love and you are lovely.

Praise you for the truth that as I move into this new day, I go with you. You know every single detail of what will come and you have already made provision to protect me from what is evil, for you are all-knowing and all-wise; you are strong and faithful, trustable and good. I praise you now, ahead of time, for what you will bring into my life today, both in challenges and in the grace to meet them.

Prayer: “Help me, Lord, to hate evil as you do, to walk in awe of your love, in fear of your greatness and in the joy of obedience to you. Amen.”

Trustable Faithfulness

“The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.” Psalm 121:5,6

Praise be to you, Lord, for your faithfulness: you are the God of goodness, the Lord of love, the Almighty One who gives your word and keeps it. I praise you for your being Elohim, the strong and faithful One. Whatever promises you give, you have the power to fulfill them and the faithfulness to do so.

I give you praise and honor and exaltation for you are the King of Glory.

You, Lord Jesus, are absolutely faithful—faithful to your righteousness, to your holiness and justice, to the right judgment of evil while causing mercy to triumph over justice. You will always follow through on who you are–the perfect, pure and powerful King, the Lord of all, Ruler of righteousness and Redeemer of your enemies.

You, Heavenly Father, being both perfectly righteous and love itself, are faithful in your hatred of sin, of evil, of anything contrary to your character. In such love, you provide the solution to the problem of evil.

In your righteousness, you judge sin, rebellion, and anything contrary to good; if you didn’t judge, you would not be righteously loving, for righteous, pure and perfect love cannot abide with anything that is tainted by unlove, by selfishness, pride and evil.

Help us to live in the light of you beautiful, gracious character, resting in the shadow of the great rock you are, no matter what comes. May we be glory givers today, praising you in and for all things

Safely on the way home

“My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—He who watches over you will not slumber;”

Psalm 121:2,3

As we prepared for our “expulsion journey,” I was worried about the dangerous, three day, arduous drive from our Middle Eastern country to Germany—we had come that way before and knew how difficult it was—and I had to constantly give it over to God.

While struggling with the situation, Psalm 121 came up in my daily reading. The last verse promises, “the LORD will watch over your going out and coming in, both now and forevermore.” He has declared that He will guide us through all circumstances, and this is exactly what I needed to hear at this point.

Looking back on it now, the whole trip was one long demonstration of God’s faithfulness. Most of the road we traveled to Germany was just one lane each way and, being the main route between Europe and the Middle East, was crowded with large trucks. It was a constant game of “catch up and pass:” coming up behind a long line of trucks, then finding opportunity to pass them, often one at a time. Along the sides of the road were wrecks of cars and trucks whose drivers had miscalculated in their attempts to pass, a reminder to be careful.

Since many of the truckers stopped for the night, we decided to continue driving right through until the next day, and made it to Munich by the morning. There we went by the Word of Life castle where Barbara had worked years before and found a reunion of students from her Bible school going on! What a wonderful God sighting, a pleasant gift from the Lord!

Our time in Germany helped us to see more clearly the strain that we are constantly under in our country of work: having to be careful in what we say, write and do, while having so little fellowship. It is a gift to be again with more believers who share our vision. And it confirmed that God was watching over our going out and coming in. His Word is true, His character is pure, His protection is sure. “The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life…” (Ps. 121:7). We will trust Him for the return trip also.

Prayer: “Praise you, Heavenly Father, for your faithful, constant love. Forgive me for often forgetting your unseen protection. Help me to walk in the certainty that you are my great and powerful Shepherd, protecting, providing and proceeding before us through the day. Thank you for what you will do today. Amen.”

The outcome of our being expelled from the country.

In the next few days our plans changed often, for we did not know where to go from here. Again the Word gave wisdom; Psalm 86 says “In the day of my trouble I will call upon you for you will answer me.” The Lord knew this exit was coming and had prepared the way.

First He had sent a single German woman, Renate, to work with us, so while we are gone, she could stay with the little local boy living with us. Second, a couple who is exploring the possibility of working with us will stay in our apartment and help Renate. Third, a new couple on our team is willing to watch the two little local girls living with us. God has it in hand.

We were able to pack up, knowing that He would bring us back or send us elsewhere, whichever was better. We had no way to know which would happen. To hold what we value with an open hand means that the Lord can truly be our God and choose what He deems best, while we can rest in His wisdom and goodness. God always goes before, prepares, protects and guides. Our part is to trust and praise.

“Lord, help me to hold all that you’ve given me with an open hand, trusting you to give and take as you deem best. May my primary affection be for you, not for what you’ve given. Amen.”

God’s Gracious Love

In Psalm 73:21-25 is a description of God’s response to our rebellion. In His love he rebukes and disciplines, revealing to us our sin. As the author of Psalm 73, Asaph, said when God brought him to his senses, “When my heart was grieved, and my soul embittered, I was senseless and ignorant, I was a brute beast before you.”

Even when we are so, God consistently draws us on to repentance: “Yet, I am always with you.”

You, Lord, constantly guide, direct and protect us: “You hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterwards you will take me into glory.” Our future is secure.

And your great love creates in us an ever-deepening response of love for you; as Asaf said: “Whom have I in heaven but you, and earth has nothing I desire besides you”. Praise be to you, Lord Jesus for your great, unquenchable, ever flowing love!

Prayer: “Lord Jesus, develop in me that intense first love for you which the author of Psalm 73 had, so that my passion for you will eclipse all the world has to offer. Amen.”

The Most Valuable Relationship

“Whom have I in heaven but you, and earth has nothing I desire besides you.”

Psalm 73:25

Praise your name, Lord Jesus, for you are the most High: you are the Almighty, powerful beyond conception, powerful beyond imagination; you are the Victor, undefeated and undefeatable;

you are the Creator, wise and good;

You are the Savior, gracious and kind.

I praise you for your perfect and powerful character,

persistently and providentially guiding all in the lives of your children.

Thank you that as my Shepherd you are loving and leading me, protecting and providing for me, teaching and revealing to me.

Thank you that during the night as I was attacked again by fear in my dreams and thoughts, I awoke and turned to the truths of Psalm 23, and you defeated the enemy. As I spoke out loud these truths from your Word, the fear and distress lessened and dissolved away. I was able to sleep again and my dreams were positive.

You, dear God, are the One and only Savior. You are the only constant Lover of my soul: no matter what I do, you love me, consistently, completely, creatively. Help me to respond to you in love, living a life th honors you.

Laid aside for good

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”

2 Corinthians 1:3,4

This week we have been operating under the “lay aside” plan. That is, the Lord has seen fit to lay us aside so He can have some undistracted time with us. We all have gotten some kind of powerful flu bug, which seems to run 5 to 7 days with fever and great weakness.

As in all things, the Lord is working out several purposes in this. For one thing, our team leader took the two little local girls living with us, which gives us a break. Then, we were able to relax some in the midst of being sick because we can’t possibly be involved in anything outside of surviving.

A more significant reason is that I’ve been too busy with work and have neglected undergirding everything by prayer. Now I’ve been able to spend some good hours in intercession and prayed about some things that have been gnawing at me, but I hadn’t taken to the Lord. What a relief to lift my soul to Him concerning these burdens, getting out the jumble of thoughts and feelings so I could process them in the light of Scripture..

I praise God for His patience and persistence with us. He knows exactly what to do to get our attention and bring correction. And if we don’t pay attention, He will turn up the volume until we do hear. “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives” (Heb. 12:6).

I see how I subtly began to place more emphasis on doing and less on praying. Even though my prayer life was still there, it was not of the over-riding importance that it should always be. Now we have some more days of prayer ahead of us, as we will probably be down for a while longer. But we know, “…this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God who raises the dead” (2 Cor. 1:9).

Prayer: “Lord, help me to always have your perspective on the happenings in life, to praise you in and for all and to cooperate with what you are seeking to accomplish in me. Amen.”
