Psalm 24:1-2

Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;”

[To you belong all things, O Lord Yahweh, the Great Creator God. Every square inch of land, every drop of water, every plant, every mineral, every molecule as well as every creature is yours. You are the undisputed owner by virtue of your creating all out of nothing, simply speaking them into existence.

You are, therefore, worthy of glory and honor, of awe and worship. You are also worthy of obedience, for we, too, belong to you as the work of your hands, as creatures before the Creator.

Psalm 24:2 “for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.”

[It was you, Lord Yahweh, who spoke and brought the earth into existence, hung it on nothing, spun it at the right speed, correctly tilted the axis for proper seasons, and sent it off in the best orbit around the sun. You are the One who planned all, established the laws of physics, set gravity at just the right strength, who put your stamp of design on all aspects of your creation.

Your intelligence is seen everywhere: in the complexity, variety and beauty of flowers, giving you honor in their gracefulness and cheer as they bear seeds for the next year; in the ingenious design of fruits, with their perfect packaging for seeds and as delicious food for creatures; in the reproduction of animals in various ways, each appropriate for their place of life; in the immense information and order of DNA molecules; in the complexity of the human body with all its systems and inner communication abilities with synapses, electric messages, hormones and thoughts.

I praise you, Lord that you are the Founder of all, the Source of all, the Protector of all, the Redeemer of all. You are the God worthy of worship and honor, of obedience and praise, of thanksgiving and self-denial.

Praise you that you lead us consistently in the right way, moving us back towards the beauty that was there in the beginning. Praise you that we can know you, walk with you, cooperate with you, be loved by you, the Great Creator God.

I give you glory, exaltation and thanks today. May you be honored in my life as I obey you. May I bring you joy, not pain; gladness, not sorrow; pleasure, not grief. I praise you now for how you will answer this prayer in the day before me, for you are gloriously faithful and fantastically good.

Power and Protection in Difficulties

Written several years several years ago when I faced with three difficult situations simultaneously and turned to Psalm 18 for comfort and encouragement.

Psalm 18:32 “It is God who arms me with strength” [In my weakness, your strength is perfected.] “and makes my way perfect.”

[You know exactly what should happen, what should come, what is right, and that is what you bring, such as these three difficulties. You know how I should respond and will guide me in that direction.]

Psalm 18:33 “He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights.”

[It is in your power that we can come out on top, for without you we can do nothing. It is in your grace that we can move onward and upward in life despite difficultlies, keeping on the whole armor, standing in the day of evil, doing all you desire from us.]

Psalm 18:34 “He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze.”

[You give us ability, strength, endurance and discipline–which we must then develop in cooperation with you.]

Psalm 18:35 “You give me your shield of victory,”

[This is important—it is YOUR shield, Lord, it is YOUR victory, therefore the glory goes to YOU alone. Yet you call us to share in your victories by your power, to defeat the true enemy in your strength, to triumph in praise, prayer and obedience. You give your shield, but we have to take it up and use it. In the three difficult situations before me now, I must get that shield up, offering the sacrifice of thanksgiving, resting in you, praising you in my weakness, trusting you in prayer and rejoicing in the unseen work you are doing behind the scenes.]

“and your right hand sustains me;”

[as I tire and droop in the battle, I can turn to you, and you lift me up, strengthen me, support me so I can continue on in the fight against the real enemy.]

“you stoop down to make me great.

[This is a beautiful and amazing truth: we are so far below you in every way, yet you lean way down over the side of Heaven to lift us up and make us great in your sight. This is sharing your glory with us, giving us your power, wisdom and grace that those around us may see your work in our lives and rejoice in you.]

Psalm 18:36 “You broaden the path beneath me,”

[You, Lord God, are at work in all the details. You open the doors, prepare the way, deal with things we are not aware of and protect us in your love.]

“so that my ankles do not turn.”

[you know what will cause us to stumble, to fall, and to be crippled—and these things you prevent, or guide us around, and as we follow, we can press on in the battle, thinking truth, thanking you, joining you in prayer, doing what your Word says is right.

Praise you, Lord God, for your goodness and graciousness and love. Praise you that I can live in these truths, bask in your light, revel in your love and rise up to run in obedience to you, bringing honor and glory to your name. May that happen today as you bring light to me

The ongoing story of our friend Adam

Leaving the city after our car was fixed, we drove up over the mountains again and down to the village where the car was first looked at.
The main road had a number of little grocery stores scattered along it. Since it was about lunchtime, we stopped and I went into one of the shops to buy some bread and cheese. And who was sitting there, but Adam, the bus driver!

“What a surprise to see you!” he said. “I am only home one day in a month and that is the day you stop here!”

“And I could have gone into any of the other little store and not seen you!” I replied.

Adam insisted that we come with him to his house. He took us up to the second story where he introduced us to his wife and several children. As it was the month of fasting, Ramadan. so he was not eating, but offered us tea. We declined out of respect for him and he was pleased.

He took me out on the balcony to show me his garden. There was a woman hanging out laundry on the balcony below.

“That’s my first wife,” said Adam. We knew that some men had more than one wife, but Adam was the first one we’d ever actually met.

“My brother married her first,” he explained, “but was killed in a car crash soon after. So it was my responsibility as his brother to marry his wife and have children in his name. I was 15, she was 19. We had three children. The first, a boy, we named after my brother.”

“I see,” I replied. “So this was an arranged marriage. And how did you come to marry your second wife?”

“I had a little shop where I sold and repaired watches and clocks,” he said, “When my eyes got bad from all the close work, I started doing long distance truck driving. On one trip to the South I met my second wife and fell in love with her. When I came home I talked with my first wife about it.”

“How did you do that?” I asked.

“Well, I asked her if she loved me. She said, ‘Yes.’ So I said to her, ‘Then give me permission to marry a second wife.’”

“ ‘No, I won’t,’ she replied.”

“ ‘OK,’ I said, ‘then I will have to divorce you because you don’t love me.’ ”

“After that she gave her permission for me to marry the second time. I had given her the children she wanted, now I have the wife I wanted.”

That began a four-year friendship with Adam. On his frequent bus trips through our city he would often stop in for a visit. He always brought us a nice gift—a whole honeycomb or a polished brass glass-enclosed candle holder or a large box of candy—and as he presented each to us, he always described it as “a worthless gift.” That in itself was a gift, giving us insight into the culture of the East, how the emphasis was on the relationship, not the gift.

Later we also made the long drive to visit Adam in his home, spending a delightful weekend with his second family.
During those years there were many chances to share the gospel with him and his family. He took a Bible and read in it, along with other literature. We saw this as part of the reason the Lord allowed our mishap with the car and the difficulty in getting it fixed: it meant meeting Adam and opened up the opportunity for him to hear the gospel. We never know what the Lord is orchestrating through the difficulties He brings into our lives, but can always know it is for good.
At one point we didn’t hear from him for a while, so we called Adam’s home and were shocked to learn that he was dead. He had been using his tractor to help a neighbor by pulling his wagon down the main road when a bus struck him from behind. After some days in the hospital in a coma, he had died.
We were thankful that the Lord had had mercy on him, giving him opportunity to find eternal life. We hope he took it, perhaps in those last hours of life while he was in a coma; we hope that we will see him in heaven.

Our Astounding God

From the devotional book, EDIFIED!

“… he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways….”
Psalm 91:11

To you, Lord Jesus, the God of creation, the Guardian of Truth, the Giver of grace and the Guide of believers, to you be glory and honor this day. You are the great One: great in purity, in wisdom, in knowledge, in power, in might, in strength. There is no good you cannot do, there is no evil you can do.

You are Yahweh, the eternal I Am: sharply separate from your creation, utterly other than your creatures, gloriously unique in your holiness, majestically mighty in your strength, astoundingly outstanding in Your awesomeness, beautifully bright in your brilliance.

You are all knowing, all seeing, all hearing. You are intensely, intimately aware of what is happening in the lives of each of your children, carefully filtering events, protecting and guiding in each one.

As we make you our dwelling place, “the Most High, who is my refuge….he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone” (Ps. 91:9,11)
How true this is, Lord Jesus, my Shepherd and Protector.

How often while I was driving have you prevented me from changing lanes, when if I had, I would have hit a car in my blind spot. You caused me to hesitate, or to look over my shoulder, or to sense that a car was there when I could not see it. You send your angels to help, guide and protect.

I think of the dark evening when I was about to cross a small street with no street lights, but for no apparent reason hesitated, and suddenly a black car with no lights flew by. If I’d stepped out as I had planned, I would have been run down.
I think of the Sunday evening, lying on the couch, when the thought kept coming, “I must check my credit card online!” and when I did, found that it was the last day to pay that month! You protect and guide in the small as well as the large things of life.

I think of the many times when I was working on some construction project when you narrowly prevented accidents, like when the large rock fell off the stonewall and just nicked the end of my thumb—if my thumb had been ½ inch further in, it would have been cut off! Or when my arm caught in the handle as I jumped off the backhoe and even though I was left dangling, my arm didn’t break.

Lord, you have been very active in our lives. You have been with us in the trouble you allowed to come, and then saved us out of it each time. You have delivered us from all our fears as well as dangers.

You are wonderful and faithful, powerful and ever present, always true to your Word. You are worthy of praise, of honor, of glory, of adoration, of worship. We bow before you in awe, we rise up to love you in obedience, we go forth to praise you throughout this day for whatever you will bring into our lives in your wisdom, love and grace.

Prayer: “Lord help me to live in the truth of your goodness and the light of your guidance. Help me to see your provision and protection, and praise you for them. Help me to obey what I know to be true about you. I thank you now for the answers you will send. Amen.”

The Wonder of Worship

Praise you, Lord Jesus, that you are the Sovereign King, the One has a plan and will work things out, who will bring good things to pass in the best way—even out of all that is negative.

Praise you, too, Lord Jesus, for reminding me last night that you are the One I am to delight in. It was good that you drew me away from work, so I could be quiet and hear your reminder. I was in danger of veering off into delighting in projects. You reminded me that my passion, my first love, my delight must be in you, Lord Jesus, the Creator of all, the Owner of all, the Ender of all. You are the One and Only One to be exalted.

Worship is very much wrapped up in delighting in you, intentionally nurturing our first love for you. So I choose to delight in you now, remembering that you are perfect in wisdom, complete in knowledge, consistent in doing what is best for your children.

You are magnificent in power, creating galaxies just by speaking. You are majestic in your grace, forgiving where justice demands punishment. You are mighty in your goodness, pouring out positives on both the righteous and the rebel.

In you there is no evil, no sin, no wrong, no error, you are pure and white as the snow, as clear as the blue sky, as majestic as the clouds, as beautiful as the still waters. You are the King of kindness, the God of goodness, the holy Hater of evil, the just Judge of wrong doers, the faithful Forgiver of sinners.

What a wonder you are, Lord Jesus, in your willingness to suffer the anguish of the cross, the despair of abandonment, the pain of rejection, the battering of Satan’s attacks, the horror of becoming sin, the crushing weight of the Father’s judgment, the banishment from His presence, and condemnation to death.

There was no need for you, the Righteous One, to suffer these things, but love led the way, faithfulness stayed the course, obedience brought the glorious conclusion. Praise you for this great display of your rich, loving, gracious Character, O Everlasting God!

Praise you for your loving care, shepherding your rebellious children, displaying great patience in the face of our disrespect, unbelief, disobedience and selfishness.

You, Lord Jesus, are worthy of worship for boundless reasons. I praise you for the joy you give as I think on how you have worked in my life, providing personal, powerful, persistent, patient intervention to bring me to my senses, to bring me to surrender and out of trouble.

I love you, Lord Jesus. I rejoice in your all-sufficient grace, I praise you for your all-encompassing goodness. Truly you are worthy of all-absorbing worship, so I bow down now and give you honor in my thoughts, desires and words. I rise up to enter this day, giving you all glory in my life. May you be the One I continually delight in, and may that delight spill over onto all I will meet today!

God’s Good Provision

It was a beautiful, warm and sunny Sunday afternoon, so we went for a walk in the woods with my son Josh and his little family.

About halfway through, I noticed that one of my hearing aids was missing. Instantly I realized what had happened: I’d been carrying my smallest grandson on my shoulders, and when I put him down, the hearing aid was dislodged. It had fallen off at that point, or somewhat later.

My first reaction was natural, “Oh no!” for this was an expensive item. But the Holy Spirit immediately prompted me to offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving: “Thank you, Lord, for allowing this. I pray that you’ll help me to find it, as you know where it is. And if I don’t find it, I’ll praise you anyway.” I then retraced the several hundred yards we’d covered, looking carefully among the leaves for the missing item, but to no avail.

As I was searching, the Spirit reminded me of how our car had been stolen shortly before we moved to Germany in 2009. I had looked for that, too, but again, to no avail. We’d hoped to sell it and buy a car in Germany, but, as you may remember, the Lord had something much greater in mind for us.

He not only supplied a car for free through our new friends, Dr. Chris and Melanie, but they also paid for the insurance, taxes, repairs and all our fuel for the whole 3.5 years we were there!

But much more importantly, the Lord gave opportunity to share the gospel with Dr. Chris, answering all his questions, so that near the end of our time there, he came to Christ. That was certainly worth losing my 15-year-old rusty car for!

So, what does God have in store through this loss? I don’t know yet, but we shall see!

I returned to join my family, again looking carefully as I retraced my steps and then we all looked again as we walked back home–but no hearing aid. I returned later in the afternoon with a magnetic stick and swept through the leaves, but nothing. The next morning, I brought a young friend who is really good at finding things—but again nothing.

Each of these fruitless searches was another chance to trust God in praise. He certainly knows where that hearing aid is, but, has chosen not to show me. I don’t know what He intends to do with this, but I can trust Him to know and to reveal it at the right time.

It is so good to relax in His love, to let go of what is temporal (it belonged to God anyway), to hold on to the truth of His goodness and grace, and to rise above the situation.

As it says in Hebrews 12:1-2, remembering that I am surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, I am told to lay aside every weight (sadness at the loss) and the sin that so easily entangles me (worry, fretting, anger) and run with patience and perseverance the race He has set before me, looking to Jesus (not to people, possessions or success), the Author and Finisher of my faith (He will carry me through).

Then, following His example, for the joy set before me (of being His child, of having Him as my Shepherd, of His protection and provision, of a certain future, of spending eternity with Him), I can endure whatever cross (loss) may come and despise whatever shame I may feel (for my failure to find it), knowing that I will be set down in heaven with Him.

What a freeing, empowering perspective! I encourage you to pray that passage for yourself every day for a month and see what God does! And I will wait to see His further purposes in this adventure of loss.

[Epilogue: I never did find the hearing aid, but the Lord provided money to pay for a new one in an interesting way. A friend was unable to sell his pickup truck, so I bought it to help him out, then was able to resell it with enough profit to pay for both a new hearing aid, and a crown from my wife’s tooth! God has it all in hand, if we will only cooperate: “He who offers the sacrifice of praise, honors me, and opens the way that I may show him the salvation of the Lord.” Psalm 50:23]

Basking in the Beauty of Jesus

Praise be to you, my marvelous Lord and Shepherd and King. I awake in the night, and find you there, watching over me. I awake in the morning and find you again, waiting with a freshly prepared new day to share with me.

You are faithful in your love, passionate in your care, gracious in your provision and persistent in your protection. I am like a feeble vine clinging to you, my solid, unshakable Rock. As thoughts of evil threats come in the night, I can easily reject them by meditating on your presence and power as presented in Psalm 18.

You are the protector of the weak and the provider for the poor in spirit, so I can trust you, as I am both. Your Word firmly calms my churning thoughts, sweetly soothes my anxious soul, provides positive, encouraging perspective and safely shields me from Satan’s subtle subterfuge.

“I love you, O Lord, my strength” (Ps 18:1)—you have drawn me graciously into a rich and strong relationship with you, making yourself my Lord, pouring into my life your strength, sharing with me your power–even though you know I will at times miss use it, rebel, disobey and disbelieve, wounding your heart—but you continue on in your unquenchable mercy. You are so gracious! You are faithful in the face of our faithlessness. You are good in the face of our rebellion. You are constant in the face of our unbelief.

Your love is lavished on us, we who are your lazy and illogical sheep, because of your majestic and marvelous Character. You are Love itself, you are faithful and forgiving, gracious and good, positive and pure. We do not deserve your love and protection, but you are insistent on having a warm and rich relationship with us, pouring your time, grace, care, protection and guidance into our lives 24/7.

I praise you, O my Lord of lavishness, my Rock of refuge, my Fortress of faithfulness, my Defender of the defeated, my Shield of strength, my Tower of power, my Stronghold of safety. I call to you, who are worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies (Ps 18:3). I praise you for your protection, glorify you for your deliverance, exalt you for your unbelievably wonderful grace at work in me each day.

You are Life, you are Light and you are Love. You are my King, my God, my Savior, my Deliverer and my Protector. You are worthy of praise, worthy of exaltation, worthy of obedience. So, to you I bow down, to you I surrender, to you I give myself. I lay down before you all my desires, my possessions, my plans, my preferences. I give you my will and take yours in its place.

May you be glorified in me today, may my responses flow, not from my puny thoughts and understanding, but from your Heart, your Word, your Power. May your Spirit overflow from my life onto all those around me so they, too, may taste of your goodness, and thereby may your Name be lifted up before all I meet this day. Amen.

Moonlight Sonata

It was a full June moon night. The air was clear and cool, silvered twice by the two shining orbs, one in the sky, one reflected in the perfectly still water of the pond.

In the near daylight brightness all was quiet–even the frogs seemed awed into stillness by the beauty around them as the cattails and bushes at the edge of the pond put a black frame on the silver scene.

This evening was the height of light, the shortest night of the year, the official tipping point of Spring spilling into Summer. And God did it beautifully, magnificently, powerfully, displaying His wonderful wisdom in setting that lovely moon in the sky, using it to give us beauty, the rhythm of months and light we can reflect on.

As David wrote, “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (Psa. 8:3,4)

God is so far beyond us, totally other, powerful and mighty. As He said to Job, “Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place…What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside? Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings?” (Job 38:12,19,20). God can.

The glory of His creation reveals to us His goodness and grace, His power and presence. He alone is worthy of worship, of surrender and of obedience.

Looking to Him, the Creator of beauty, of wisdom and of rest is the way to walk in the light. As a famous person said,
“If you look around you, you will be distressed.
If you look within you, you will be depressed.
If you look to Jesus, you will find rest.” –Corrie Ten Boom
May we, like the moon, reflect His beauty to all around us, shining the light of His goodness and grace into all the dark corners of the world, joining Him as He moves history to a conclusion and takes us with Him.

From EDIFIED!

“I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.” Psalm 116:1

O Lord God, as the great I Am, you are wonderful in your ways, in your mercy, in your patience, goodness and grace. You display your glory in great acts of salvation (Israel from Egypt, David from Saul, us from the dominion of darkness) and are therefore worthy of worship and wonder, of honor and exaltation, of praise and adoration.

You are the One who provides all that your children need. You have poured out upon us worth: created us in your image, redeemed us by the blood of the Lamb, chose us to be your sons and daughters, commissioned and equipped us for meaningful and specific service, and you crown us every day with loving kindness.

You call us to belong to you, and in that you become our glory and strength. In this belonging, you give gifts to us out of your glorious riches, calling us to share in your holiness, to share in your righteousness, in your divine nature (2 Pet. 1:4), and in your strength.

You call us to be more than conquerors, to be kings and priests, and to be effective instruments in your hands. In our belonging to you, your glory comes upon us and we participate in it by obeying you, praising in problems, exalting in you, rejoicing in who you are, seeing you more and more through worship and the Word and being transformed into your likeness (2 Cor. 3:18).

You, Lord God, are more than we could have hoped for, more than we could imagine, far more than we can know. We get just a glimpse of your greatness in this verse: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace, as you trust in Him, so that Your lives may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (Rom. 15:13). What more could we ask for in life than overflowing Joy, Peace and Hope from you and with you?

You who are our rock, our strength and our salvation, you are with us in trouble, you will save us through it and out of it. To you be Glory and Honor, Praise and Power, Majesty and Might, Exaltation and Obedience now and forever.

Prayer: “Lord, for your honor I want to walk in the light of who you are today: the Mighty, Majestic, Magnificent and Munificent Creator and Sustainer of all. May I live in the light of your presence, finding my joy, strength, wisdom and help in you. Amen.”

The Ongoing Adventure of 1981

The next morning, after a breakfast of freshly baked French-type bread, white cheese and local tea, we piled back into the car and began our slow trek up through the mountains. The transmission whined and complained, the worn gears fought against the pressure I put on the gearshift, but by afternoon we had made it down the mountainside and into the city.

Charles got directions to the car repair area–the people here tend to group all the same businesses together in one spot—and we found a repair shop that advertised repairs on VW’s. I pulled in and we all got out. Charles explained to the mechanic what the problem was; he pulled the car into his garage and went down into the pit underneath it.

After about fifteen minutes, he came back up, wiping his hands on an oily rag. “Sorry to tell you this, but you need a new transmission. You won’t find any new gears here and it would cost more to replace them than it will for a new transmission.”

Well, that put us on a new track! Again the Spirit called on me to give thanks, and I did. I asked the mechanic to take the transmission out of the car; I knew I’d have to surrender it to customs in order to get the new one I’ve have order from Germany.

Charles suggested that he go on by bus with his own two girls and our three “adopted” children to deliver them to their father. He took their luggage and, after we’d all said our good-byes, left for the bus station.

While we were making those arrangements, a local woman had come over to see what these foreigners were doing in her city—not many came to this far Eastern city. When we explained to her what had happened, she invited us to come and visit her home, which was right across the street.

This was such an unexpected thing, and at the same time, as we were to learn, so typical of local hospitality. We spent the afternoon with her, then that night got on a bus along with our defunct transmission for the twelve-hour return trip to our home city.

Since we were members of the German Touring Club, I called them and they arranged to have a refurbished transmission shipped to me. It took a week to arrive. When customs called to say it was there, I took a bus out to the airport, dragging along the old transmission.

As the customs agent went through the paper work, he said, “Our warehouse is full, so I won’t take your old transmission. I’ll write it in your passport and the next time you leave the country you can take it with you.”

I objected. I already had one transmission to take back with me on the city bus; how was I supposed to drag two along? However, the agent insisted that I keep it. Unbeknownst to me, this customs agent was also an agent of God, protecting me from a big mistake.

That evening we got back on the bus to the East and spent another long night of sitting in uncomfortable seats, having our light sleep interrupted by “rest breaks” as well as stops to pick up new passengers. We arrived groggy and tired; while we were transferring to a taxi, Nat stepped into a hole in the road filled with raw sewage.

We got to the repair shop just as the owner was opening up. He looked at the new transmission, then looked at me, “Where’s the old one? I need to get several parts off of it in order to install the new one!”

“I left it in at home.”

“Well, you have to go back and get it; you’ll never find those parts here!”

My first response was “Oh, no, another bus trip home!” My second was, “Thank you Lord, that I still have that old transmission at home, not in the customs warehouse!” Now the goodness of God stood out in stark reality—He knew that I would need those parts and made sure the customs agent made me take it home!  This made it easier to thank Him for this new situation, and for the next one that I was about to learn about.

As I turned to leave, the mechanic added, “It is good you have to make another trip. You were gone so long that I thought you didn’t want the car, so I sold some parts off of it. I’ll try to get them back while you go to get the old transmission.”

How do you respond to that?! Either with anger or with a laugh and “Thank you for that, too, Lord. I praise you for how you are going to help get those parts back!”

It was August and we were in the Southeast. It was hot, very hot, and it was also Ramadan, the month of fasting. The neighbor lady came out again to invite us in. When she heard about our situation, she invited Barbara, Renate and the boys to stay with her while I went back to home to get the other transmission. We spent the day resting in the oppressive heat.

That evening I again boarded the bus for the long ride. I took the new transmission with me partly to make sure I got the proper parts off of the old one and partly to make sure the mechanic didn’t sell any parts off of the new one!

The next question I had was, do I now have to transport both transmissions back with me or is there a better way to give the mechanic what he needed?

I arrived in our city on Sunday morning and took a taxi home. On the way I saw my local mechanic pass us in his car. I had never seen him anywhere but in his shop before, so this was a definite God sighting. “Follow that car,” I shouted excitedly in English to the taxi driver, then realized my error and translated it into the local language. We were able to catch the mechanic, and he agreed to follow us to my house.

After looking over the two transmissions, he took the necessary parts off of the old one and put them on the new one. That simplified everything for me!  That was definitely a clear answer to my prayer!

That night I got on the bus once again, hopefully for my last twelve-hour trip to the East.  I noticed that the driver was the same one from the previous night so I greeted him. At 3am we stopped for “breakfast” and the driver, Adam, invited me to eat with him. I learned that he was from the village where the first mechanic had looked at our car.

When I arrived at the repair shop, the mechanic looked pleased with what I’d brought. “OK, I’ll get to work on this. It will take me two days to get it back together.”

So for two days we stayed with our widow lady friend, a chance to see local culture from the inside out. She, as a good Muslim was, of course, fasting, which meant no food or water from sun up (5am) to sundown (8pm).  But she did give us food and drinks during the day, although she slept most of the time herself.

Every night at 3 am a drummer would come through the neighborhood to make sure that everyone got up to make breakfast before sunrise. Our nights were short with broken sleep.

There was nowhere to wash, and there was no running water most of the time. I was so sweaty that I longed for a shower, so one afternoon I took one tea cup of drinking water, went into the “squat toilet,” stripped down and very slowly poured that water over myself. Ah, the refreshment of washing off all that sweat! I had never appreciated a shower so much!

The next day I went downtown by city bus. A villager got on, an elderly man. He sat across from me and stared. Then he got up, came over and gave me a very close and careful inspection, with his face about two inches from mine.

I greeted him in the local language and he jumped back. His expression said, “It talks!” He had never seen a foreigner before and reacted as if he were confronted with some strange animal. That helped me to understand how far from western influence we were. We did have a nice chat after he grasped that I could speak his language.

When the car was finally ready, we went with our widow lady into town, picked up her refrigerator from a repair shop and brought it home for her. It was the least we could do after her wonderful hospitality. Then we set out for home, not knowing the amazing God sighting about to occur.
