The Privilege of Prayer

So much to praise you for, O Lord. After listening to my doctor friend talk about the injustice of the social medicine system, I praise you that we are not powerless like he is. In you there is power in prayer, power to praise, to protest, to ask for provision, to be proactive and bring change.

You, Lord God, are so gracious to pour your power into our feeble lives through prayer. You give us full, immediate, intimate access to your throne room so we can bring all to you, and join you in what you are doing in each instance.  I praise you for your great answers to prayer, for how you are working in the lives of those we are interceding for, for the way you are bringing change.  We praise you, too, for the prayers that have yet been answered as far as we can tell—but we know you are at work doing so, for you are thankful.

We shout from the housetops your greatness and goodness and glory.  You are worthy of praise, you are worthy of adoration, you are worthy of obedience, for you are pure, positive and perfect.  In you can we trust!

The Best Five Things You Can Do in Leading Yourself Well

First, for your spirit:

Regular, personal, God-focused daily worship in your QT  (2 Cor 3:18)

Worship by giving Him glory for who He is without focusing on how that benefits me.

Use a Psalm to focus on His character.

This is spending time in the light of His presence.

This brings transformation of your whole being.

Second, for your soul:

Meditate on the Word (Psalm 1:1-3)

This means memorizing passages of Scripture, the personalizing and praying them

This brings transformation of your mind, will and emotions

Third, for your general well-being:

Praise in and for all things (Psalm 34:1,2, 1 Thes. 5:18)

Focus on the greatness, goodness, grace and glory of God.

Let Truth rule, not emotions.

Grow in faith by praising God especially for things we don’t like.

Fourth, for the health of your body:

Drink more water –2 liters a day is a good goal.  (1 Cor 6:19,20)

Since I started doing this, I’ve not had a serious cold in years and years.

Maintaining your body’s healthy water level:

Keeps airways lubricated: protects from invasion of germs.

Washes germs that enter our mouths into the stomach where they die.

Keeps our blood is thinner, which means:

It flows better, less chance for clots

more oxygen to the brain (can think better)

more oxygen to cells, (function better)

more food to cells, more waste from them.

Makes our kidneys work better

Prevents constipation

Keeps the whole body better balanced.

Fifth, for the benefit of those around you:

Whenever possible, pray with and for each person you talk with.

It is good for the other person,

pointing them towards God,

bringing His power into their lives

demonstrating your love for them.

And good for you.

Keeps you aware of your dependence on Him.

Keeps you humble and open to His leading.

Keeps us joining God in what He’s doing rather than expecting Him to join us!

Praying Biblical Prayers for Protection

Lord, help this person to fear you; surround him with your hedge of angels.  Protect him from the evil one and evil people.

“The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.”       –Psalm 34:7

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways….”      –Psalm 91:11

“Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”  –Heb 1:14

Lord, put your hedge of thorns around this person so he will be quickly  “pricked” when he strays off your path and repent. Protect him from himself.

“I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.”                                  –Rom. 7:18

The Lord said, “Therefore…I will hedge up your way with thorns….”                               –Hos. 2:6

“The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway.”                               –Prov. 15:19

“In the paths of the wicked lie thorns and snares, but he who guards his soul stays far from them.”                     –Prov. 22:5

Ours is a God of Details

Praise you, Lord, for your good and gracious guidance yesterday in the buying of the tickets for our next trip (it took a number of tries before we could get the website to work, and in each failure there was a new insight). Praise you, Lord that you can use such technological failures and difficulties to protect us from making wrong decisions.  The last such glitch was that my credit card was not accepted, and it turns out that the bank’s computer didn’t read the note that I live overseas and would be making many purchases there, so don’t flag my card as being subject to fraud—no, the computer missed that and shut my card off.  And that failure made us pause, reconsider and make other decisions about days to fly.  Praise you for your attention to such details.  I give you glory for your wisdom, your care, your attention to tiny things we aren’t aware of, your goodness in so many ways. As Psalm  33 says:

13 “From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind;”  [you see every single one of us, not as a mass, but as individuals, you know each one’s name, you know our thoughts and our words before we speak them.  You pay close attention to all in our lives.]

Psa 33:14 “from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth—“ [You watch every single person; your ability to see, hear, interact with and love over 6 billion people at the same instant is amazing, unbelievable, incomprehensible.  You are an awesome God!]

Psa 33:15 “he who forms the hearts of all,” [You formed the heart of each individual, one at a time, you work to draw them to yourself, one at a time, you died for each, you paid the penalty for each, you call each, knowing that many will choose not to come–such pain that must give your heart.]
“who considers everything they do.” [Every single thing I do you examine, you notice, you think about: brushing my teeth, thinking lustful thoughts, being impatient, saying a kind word, being proud, responding humbly—you not only see, but you think about, evaluate, mull over, weigh each act.  Again, that you can do this for over 6 billion people all at the same time—this is beyond comprehension and shows how great, how mighty, how amazingly wonderful you are.

Words fail me, comprehension fails me, understanding fails me—you truly are God, the One who is worthy of worship, worthy of belief, of faith, of trust, of obedience.  I must bow before you, reject my trust in my puny, microscopic, feeble, ignorant, foolish self, and put my trust in you, in your wide wisdom, in your complete comprehension, your lustrous light, your pure perception, your noble knowledge, your deep delight in your undeserving children.  May you be honored, glorified, exalted and lifted up in my life today; may I follow your leading, not mine.  May your heart be delighted with my obedience, which can only come with your grace and goodness at work in me. To you be glory today.

Our God is Worthy of Obedience!

Praise you, Lord God, for a new day, another opportunity to live with you, for you, by you in your power.  You are faithful, Lord Jesus, to sustain us, guide us, protect us, use us, even though we don’t deserve it.

I give you honor and praise and glory before anything starts today,  before we see any of your works, for you are worthy of worship and adoration first of all because of your wonderful being, your perfect person, your marvelous character. You are full-orbed, exactly balanced, totally True, sinless and faultless, full of light and life and love.  You are absolutely unique: the only non-created One, the only from-eternity-to-eternity One, the only self-sufficient One, the only truly Triune One, the only Source of contra-conditional, unalterable, unending agape love, the only All-knowing One, the only Undefeated and undefeatable One, the only true Creator, the only Sustainer of all, the only One who can end all.  You are utterly other, absolutely absolute, faithfully faithful and completely complete.  You are unshifting, unchanging and unalterable—perfect, persistent, powerful. You are worthy of worship, worthy of trust, worthy of love, worthy of obedience.

Praise you that today there will be a multitude of opportunities to give you glory in many little decisions: to praise in the face of disappointment, to be patient in the face of frustration, to rest in the face of failure.  With you there is ever enough Grace, from you ever flows sufficient wisdom, by you there is ever plenty of protection, in your there is ever a super abundance of love.  You are all we need, you are all we could want, you are all there truly is.

Forgive us for trying to find what we want, need, desire and lust for in other, empty sources.  In doing so, our unbelief and rebellion wound your heart again, bring dishonor to your name and burn our souls with the caustic power of sin. Help us instead to turn our eyes to you only, to repent of our foolishness before we commit it and to seek you, you alone.  May you be glorified in my life today, Lord Jesus, my King and Shepherd, my Captain and Navigator, my Savior and Lord.

Praying Scripture for Unbelievers

Prayer for unbelievers, cooperating with God in what He is doing:

“Lord bring to us those who will believe.”

1. Sight: “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” 2 Cor. 4:4

Lord, give him spiritual sight!  Take away his blindness!

2. Light: “But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble.” Proverbs 4:18,19
“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” 2 Cor 4:6  John “…came as a witness to…that light, so that thought him all men might believe….”The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.” John 1:7-9

“Lord, shine the light of the knowledge of the gospel deeply into his heart!”

3. Conviction: The Holy Spirit, “…will convict the world of guilt…in regard to sin because they do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness because I am going to the Father…and in regard to  judgment because the prince of this world now stands condemned.” J. 16:8-10

“Lord, may he see his guilt and come to You for forgiveness and surrender!

4. Revelation:  “…when I am lifted up I will draw all men to myself.” John 12:32 No man can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.” John 6:44

“Lord, give him dreams, visions, blessings, tragedies, fears, longings, experiences, relationships, whatever is necessary to move him to seek you.”

5. Repentance:  “Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” 2Ti 2:25,26

“Lord, grant him repentance and lead him to a knowledge of the truth, that he may come to his senses and escape from the trap of the devil.”

His love is enough!

Ps 23:1  “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.”

It is so good to know you, Lord God, my Father in Heaven, my Shepherd Jesus, my Guide, Holy Spirit.  You are all I need, if nothing works out in this world, if all my dreams and desires come to nothing, if I am a total failure in life, if I suffer multiple tragedies and losses, still, knowing you is enough for joy.

To know that you work to tailor-design every day, every minute of my existence, that you, in your love and grace are protecting me from all actual harm (what will damage me spiritually, what is more than you know I can handle in your grace), while allowing or sending what will mature, deepen, challenge and equip me to serve you better, this is enough.  To know that your power, wisdom and love are unending, immeasurable, inexorable, ever present and perfect, this is far more than I need.

In you is all, in you I am complete.  Praise be to you, O Great One, Lord Jesus, whose love is wide and long, high and deep, without beginning or end, all encompassing, unstoppable, uninfluenced by any reaction.  I praise you, exalt you, glorify you, lift you up for what you will do today in goodness and grace.  Praise be to you in all.

Thoughts on Col. 3:12a

Col 3:12a, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved….”

Praise you, Lord, for the surety that I am with you, chosen to be your child. Praise you for the stability of your love and forgiveness, the certainty of the significance and security you give me every day and for all eternity.  Being created in your image, being redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, being chosen before the foundation of the world, being called, cleansed, transformed and claimed as your child, being made holy, being commissioned and equipped for special service, being dearly loved, deeply cared for, doted on and delighted in—these Truths—all of which flow from your pure and perfect character–are the reasons I can rest in you.

You have done so much to bring your rebellious creatures into your family; it has cost you so much, there is no way that you would retreat from this expensive purchase you’ve made! Plus you have given your word: in over 2,000 years of moving men to record your thoughts in the Bible, you have predicted and promised, you have predestined and provided all that what you proposed to do.  In you we can trust–but we cannot trust ourselves, we must learn to rely on your Truth, not our perception, perspective or feelings.

I praise you, Lord God, my Shepherd and King, my Lord and Owner, my God and Authority, that you are solid, stable, unchanging, trustworthy and good—loving, wise, powerful, just, righteous, firm and gracious.  You are the only source of Truth, of Light, of Love.  All else is temporary, fickle, shifting and empty.  Without you there is no meaning, no purpose, no hope, no direction, no light.

Praise be to you that you are real, powerful, present and presiding.  Praise be to you that today you call me, and each believer, to live with you, by you and for you. You have gone through this day and prepared all things, given us significant work to do and supplied all the grace we need to do it.

You are worthy of worship, of praise, glory and honor.  I bow before you and give these to you, Lord. I bow before you in surrender, I rise up to obey, to be a glory-giver, to live a life worthy of you.  May you be exalted in my life today, my Savior and King, Lord Jesus.

No Need to be Shaken Psalm 62:2

Meditation on Ps 62:2 “You only are my rock, my salvation and my high tower.  I will never be shaken.”

Praise be to you, my Lord and King, Captain and Navigator, Teacher and Leader.  You only are my mighty Rock: solid, unshakable, stable, sure, consistent, trustable and eternal.  With you there is certainty, there is hope, there is the possibility of joy in a world of increasing turmoil.  There is no certainty anywhere else but in you.

You only are my salvation, you have redeemed my soul from hell, rescued me from the domain of darkness and translated me into the Kingdom of Light.  You have taken my rebel heart, full of evil, destruction and selfishness, and transformed me into a new creation. You have taken me as your enemy and adopted me into your family so that I am now your beloved son.  You have annulled my just sentence of eternal separation from you in suffering, punishment, failure and death.  You have given me the gift of eternal life, and of an ever-increasing joy here on earth, of a continual upward path of growth, insight, wisdom and transformation.  You are a marvel!

In addition to all this, you are my salvation every day, protecting me from the attacks of the enemy (you both hold back the tide of evil and you give me the armor, grace and training to use it to deal with what challenges you, in your wisdom, allow through).  You also save me from my own evil desires (alerting me to my wrong responses, giving grace to reject them and respond as you want), and from the negative possibilities of life (how often you have spared me from car accidents, especially when changing lanes on the turnpike).  Truly you are my Salvation in every sphere of life, and in every incident in life!

You are my high tower, my sanctuary—like a giant at my side, you lift me up, set me on your shoulder and make me safe. You are my refuge but not like a stone tower, rather like a great friend, a loving Lord.  You give me perspective, you elevate my thoughts and understanding, you enable me to see further in the distance.  With you there is the ability to grasp more of what you are doing, to trust you more, to defeat the fears and worries that flow out of my heart.  With you there is intimate relationship, deep exchange, personally tailored input.  In you I am safe from all that could harm me, while you let through all that will make me grow, give a platform upon which I can demonstrate your grace to those around me, and allow me to give you more and more glory—which is the whole purpose of life.

With you alone there is such stability, certainty, power, protection and grace that whatever you allow, I can remain unshaken, certain that you will work through it, carry me with you and come out the other side in a way that will bring glory to you, growth to me and good to those around me.  Praise be to you today, Lord Jesus, King and Shepherd, Lord and Servant Leader, the great resolver of paradoxes, the preparer of each step in life, the guide who goes before. You are worthy of worship, of exaltation, of complete obedience.  To you be glory forever and ever.  Amen!

Re-enacting the Garden of Eden

What if?  What if, in the Garden of Eden, instead of being a passive listener, Adam had broken into the conversation Satan was having with Eve?  He could have followed God’s directive to lead and protect his wife and said, “Hey, what are you doing, talking to my wife?  If you want to talk, talk to me!”  And after a few more sentences, “No, you are a liar; we are not going to listen to you.  Come on, Eve, we’re leaving this fake.  It’s time to get ready for our evening time with God!”

You probably know that God’s specific reprimand to Adam was about Adam’s failure to lead, about him following his wife instead of obeying God’s command.  (“Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,…’” Gen 3:17). The original sin was not eating the fruit, but Adam’s failure to lead himself well and then failure to lead his wife well.  That then resulted in the eating of the forbidden fruit.

Yes, what if Adam had led himself well?  How different the world, history, our lives would have been!  Recently in my worship time it struck me: every day we get to reenact the Garden of Eden and in some small way correct Adam’s mistake.  Satan comes to us and tempts us.  His main temptation is for us to disbelieve God and follow a lie.  Take for instance worry.  Every time I worry, I’m saying, “God isn’t really big enough to handle this situation.  I need to step in and help Him, make sure He does it right!”  The Almighty God who hung the earth on nothing, who breathed out the stars, who sets up and takes down rulers can’t keep His word to guide and protect me?  That’s what I’m really saying when I worry!  I have chosen to believe a lie of the enemy.

Instead, when I am tempted to worry, I need to break into the conversation between me, my flesh and the devil, and say, “No, I am not going to listen to these lies that God is weak!  My God is strong, He is the Commander of the Hosts of Heaven, He is the Sovereign God who is the bringer of the dawn, the provider of salvation, the ender of time.  I choose to trust Him to bring what I need into my life, to orchestrate the events beyond my control.  I choose to pray about this, to do my part and leave the outcome to Him!  Praise you, Lord God, for what you are going to do in this case!”

If we respond like that, we will accomplish what Adam failed to do.  We will have chosen to be glory-givers, not glory-stealers.  We will have joined God in another step of His great plan for the recreation of the universe.  We will have moved ahead in the sanctification journey the Lord has for us.

So each day, be aware of where you are living the Garden of Eden test all over again. Every temptation to be impatient, unkind, fret, worry, be jealous, compete or give into fears, is also the great opportunity to take up God’s grace, lead yourselves well and be a fountain of grace to those around you.  Which will you choose?  “He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.” (Prov. 10:17)
