The Contrast: God's Charater and Mine

I praise you this morning, Lord, for your steadiness in the face of my floundering. I am up and down, both diligent and lazy, productive and useless, strong and weak, spiritual and selfish, kind and harsh, disciplined and rebellious.

I give you praise that you are so unlike me, that every day you are the same in your character, your heart, your plans, your love.  Each morning when I awake, my emotions are jumbled, my thoughts are full, my impressions from yesterday are varied, but you are the steadily the same, ever the same: gracious, great, glorious and unyieldingly, unwavering, unbelievably good.

Being thankful for this is not enough: you are Someone to be ecstatic about, the One to be celebrated, rejoiced in, exalted and worshiped. To turn our inner eyes away from self, the world and all that is in it to You is to go from darkness to light, from weakness to strength, from groveling on the streets of life, to walking with the King of creation.  You are such a contrast from the weak and temporary things we have here.  You are the Creator and Sustainer of all, the Preparer of a new heaven and earth, the Ender of history and the Essence of eternity.

In you is endless beauty, unfathomable love, unsearchable wisdom, inscrutable holiness and unending goodness. In you we can rest in security, in you we can live in light, in you we can know Truth, in you we can be abundantly accepted, lavishly loved, completely cherished and deeply delighted in.

I can praise you now for what will come today, Lord Jesus, for you have prepared it all, will guide in all, will provide in all. I can rest in the richness of your character, be at peace in the provision of your grace, bask in the light of your love and rejoice in the certainty of your presence.  You have given me all joy and peace in yourself. What more could I need? Nothing! You are far more than sufficient and I rest in, rejoice in, respond in the wonder of being your undeserving but beloved child.

Stability For Today

Praise you, Lord, for your gracious and kind hand at work in my life. I give you glory for your rock solid goodness, your whole-hearted holiness, your deep, continual steadiness. You do not vacillate the way I do, you do not sin and suffer remorse, you do not stray off the path of righteousness and need correction as I do.

I praise you for your immutability, your perfection, your flawlessness. In you there is surety, in you there is certainty, in you there is eternal, unshifting, beautiful purity. You are the One, the only One, upon whom I can lean, for you will never  change and will never let me down.

You are the great and gracious One, ever active in my life, correcting, directing, protecting, empowering. When I stray, you are there to prick, convict and correct, bringing me back to the Path of peace and the Rock of rest.

It is so comforting, so encouraging, so gracing to live in your powerful presence, your lavish love, your awesome acceptance and your righteous rule. I look out over the sketch of today, just a few bare points of possibility visible to me, but at the same time you, Lord, see every detail of what will happen in full color, every dimension, total outcome. Therefore I can rest in the fact that for you there are no surprises, you can guide me through every twist and turn, every problem and possibility. You prepare me, bringing to mind what should be done, what I should remember and what I should avoid. Praise you, Lord, for your complete love, your competent preparation, your consistent protection, your continual presence.

To you belongs glory, honor, praise and obedience for you are perfect in personality, complete in character, marvelous in ministry, powerful in performance and illogical in love, giving us the opposite of what we deserve.

I praise you, bask in your love, revel in your goodness, rejoice in your patience, celebrate your acceptance and rest in your forgiveness. Today I bow before you in awe, surrendering whole-heartedly, to rise up in obedience and go forth in joy, all because of your infinite greatness. To you be glory today in all I do and say, think and feel, desire and do. Amen.

Hope in God Alone Psalm 43 Part 4

Praise you, Lord God, that in the midst of failure, trouble and sorrow, we can look to you, our great Rock, our Refuge, our Redeemer and speak Truth to ourselves:

Psa 43:5  “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?”

[I must take my eyes off my troubles and raise them to you, Lord, the ultimate Reality. Who can be greater than you, thwarting your plans?  What can come without your permission? What can occur where you don’t give more grace than is needed? What can threaten us where you don’t give wisdom in dealing with it. You, Lord, are our sufficiency, you are all we need in every happening.]

“Put your hope in God,”

[This is the key: hope in nothing else! All here on earth can and will faill: people, resources, strength, wisdom and self. But you, O Mighty King, Creator and Ruler of everything, you never fail, you always triumph, you carry through, you protect, expose, empower, engrace. In you there is true hope, for you will do what is best, right, good and glorious.]

“for I will yet praise him,”

[This is a certainty. Now no matter what we face, you will act, help, carry us through and we will be able to praise you for what you will do.]

“my Savior and my God.”

[For you have made yourself my Savior, and my God, I belong to you and you will care for me! You will use me in your plan and Kingdom. I can be secure in the certainty of a future with you, the King of Glory, the Ruler of the Universe, the Shepherd of Time, the Ender of History, the Beginner of Eternity. To you be all honor and glory today. Amen.]

Light and Truth Psalm 43 Part 3

Lord, as we grope our way through the dim light of life, not knowing the next step or the way to go, it is wonderful that we can turn to you for help. As David prayed,

Psa 43:3  “Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me;”

[We need your light to see the next step, we need your truth to think correctly. Only you, Lord Jesus, can provide these. There is no human agency who can give us such help for we are limited, small, ignorant.]

“let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.”

[Truth and light point us to you, the Great Rock, the unshakable God who has created all. Unlike David we don’t have to go to a mountain to find you, for you are here, but we need to look to you, to turn from our own wisdom and ideas to you for enlightenment and truth. Reliance on our own understanding is deadly; trust in your understanding brings life, freedom, joy and strength.]

Psa 43:4  “Then will I go to the altar of God,”

[Seeing you clearly again, Lord, leads us to worship, to praise, to bowing before you.]

“ to God, my joy and my delight.”

[You only are the source of real, lasting, enduring joy, based on your eternal character, your powerful being, your perfect personality.  And when I see you more and more in worship, you become more and more my delight in the light of your truth. You are the One to be delighted in, for you are marvelous, beautiful, awesome, gracious, mighty and majestic. All the earth has to offer is only a vague shadow of the goodness and greatness that dwells in you, Lord God. When we see you for who you are, it is hard not to delight in you!]

“I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.”

[You are worthy of worship for you are the final authority, you are the ultimate power, you are the Most High, and you are my God, I belong to you, you love me, you care for me, you delight in me! How can that be, with you being so great and I so miniscule, with you being so holy and I so sinful, with you being eternal and I mortal, with you being perfect and I faulty?

Your love overcomes all these obstacles and you have called me to be yours and given yourself to be my God. What a marvelous, illogical, unexpected outcome in an otherwise hopeless world. I praise you, O God, for the great privilege of being your child, of living with you in your light and truth. May you be glorified in my life today. Amen.

Pour Out Your Heart Psalm 43 Part 2

Psa 43:2  “You are God my stronghold.”

[David is speaking powerful reality here. What a wonderful statement of Truth! In you, Lord, is strength, in you is safety, in you is help; you are our unwavering, infinite, eternal shelter.

I praise you that your presence brings peace, protection, provision and power. In you there is all that we can need and desire. In the turbulence of daily life your power protects, your love leads and your goodness guides. Praise be to you that this is always true, whether we can see it or not. May I live in the light of this truth today!]

“Why have you rejected me?”

[David now pours out his heart, expressing his feelings, which, in contrast to the verse before, are not true. God has not rejected him, but it feels like it. David is doing what is right, though, for to pour out how we feel helps us to see the lies we are believing.]

“Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”

[Here is another lie: he did not, and we do not, have to go about mourning, we do not have to be oppressed by the enemy. If we keep on the armor, if we keep up the shield of faith, we can praise in the midst of the worst situation and know the peace and joy of Jesus. This does not mean, of course, that we won’t have hard times, negative feelings and attacks of the evil one, but it means that in the midst of these we can praise instead of mourning, we can rise up and win rather than being oppressed.

I think of the man we met recently, who as a 15 year old was told that he had an untreatable tumor and would be dead in 3 months. He had so much pain that he shook all the time. A relative challenged him to thank God for the pain, which he did, and in the end God healed him. Now 17 years later he is strong and vigorous, living for the Lord. “He who offers the sacrifice of thanksgiving honors me, and opens the way that I may show him the salvation of the Lord.” Ps 50:23]

Gory be to you, Lord Jesus, our Great Shepherd, our Powerful King, our All-sufficient Savior. I praise you for what you will bring today: opportunities to praise you by faith in all, to rejoice in your goodness, to rest in your love.

Guide me today, Lord, in living in a way that will bring you glory, honor and praise, which will demonstrate to those around us the power of your grace, the awesomeness of your holiness, the depth of your wisdom and the goodness of your heart. Thank you now for the answers you will give. Amen.

Far More Than Enough!

Praise you, Lord, that we are alive, physically and spiritually, able to walk in your grace, in your power, in your protection. I thank you for the great privilege of being your child, your servant, your brother, your partner in the great plan of transformation that you have for the universe.

You, Lord Jesus, are my stability, my shield, my fortress, my God and my King. You are unswerving, unshakable, unchanging, undefeated. You are powerful, personal, present and perfect. In you is all we need, all we desire, all we long for.To know you is far more than enough, to belong to you is abundance, to live for you is richness, to work with you is awesome.

I praise you, Lord God, for revealing yourself through your Word, for working in us through your Spirit, for strengthening us through your power, for guiding us through your wisdom, for protecting us through your might.

You are worthy of worship, praise, glory and honor each moment, from now through eternity. Praise and glory be to you today from each specific decision I make!

God the Great Vindicator Psalm 43 part 1

Psalm 43:1

“Vindicate me, O God,” [You are the One who can bring out the proper conclusion from the corrupt system of this world, from unjust accusations, from corruption, from evil rulers, for you direct the hearts of men.

Your command is “commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your justice as the noon day sun.” (Psalm 37:5,6)  We look to you go  vindicate us, O Lord God. You are Elohim, the incredibly powerful and eternally faithful One whom we can trust.]

and plead my cause against an ungodly nation;” [And so you did for me. At the time I was put on trial for illegally sharing my faith, the judge said to me “We don’t care whether you are the one who mailed these brochures in or not; if it is illegal to do this, you will go to jail; if it proves legal, you will go free.” I was left with you only as my defender, Lord, and you were more than adequate.]

rescue me from deceitful and wicked men.” [Then when the judge said that he’d send this case to a specialist for evaluation, and named the law professor who would give the opinion, I knew that you had rescued me from the wicked who lie. This professor was my friend, one who would give a correct answer, setting me free! He would do this, not because we were friends, but because he would follow the law.

You are the One, Lord, who rises above the squabbles of men and can bring the proper conclusion to each situation. Not every instance of persecution will turn out like mine. It may be that you will allow your child to hounded, to go to jail, or to be executed, as Bonhoeffer was, but in that outcome you and he will triumph in your grace as you take him home, or sustain him through the suffering of injustice. You, Lord God, are the One who knows what is best and we can trust you for it.]

Glory be to you, Lord God, the High and Holy Triune One who lives outside of time, who intervenes in history to guide, protect, vindicate and rescue those who put their hope in you, who fear you, not men or suffering or death.

Praise you, Lord Jesus, that you are Reality, that you are Truth, that you are the great Shepherd leading us through valleys of darkness and suffering out again into the sun of your salvation. Praise you that we can trust you in the midst of difficulty and grief, in uncertainty and suspense, in sickness and exhaustion. You, Lord God, are the One who will carry us through as we trust in you. May praise and glory be yours today in all we do and say. Amen.

I may fail, but you are there

Praise you, Lord, for a new day, another chance to live with you. In the night my uncertainty, worry and fears surface and I often feel far from you.  But this is an opportunity to touch the Rock and remember how safe I am in you: you know what you are doing; you have a plan; you are moving us forward; stability does not depend on my performance but on your character—which is immutable, mature, holy, perfect and eternal. You will take me to the next step; you will guide me in all that is to be done today. I can rest in you, trust in you, rejoice in you.

I may fail (and will every day), but you are always there to fill in the lacks, to pick me up, to give guidance, to encourage and to love. I can relax in you, listen to your voice and move ahead in Truth. How wonderful it is to be your child, to wait in you, to rejoice in you. I give you honor, praise, glory and exaltation. May you be honored and glorified in my life today.

Reveling in the Goodness of God

Praise you, Lord, for your good and gracious work in our lives. Your faithfulness, unyielding goodness, wide ranging wisdom and persistent power, all coordinated and motivated by your love, ensure us that we live in the mighty shadow of your persistent protection. You are the trustable One, the encouraging One, the empowering One, especially when things look and feel bad.

I praise you, O God, for your wonderful care and provision, which we have seen so clearly, especially over the last few weeks as we prepared to leave Europe and return to the States: the way you guided int the clearing out of my mother-in-law’s house (and so much going to others to be used further); for the sale of it at the last minute for the amount we wanted, to a believer who was positive, helpful, faithful, willing to clear out the remaining furniture and send it to poor believers in other countries;  for the great help that several friends gave; for the loan of a van the last week; for another friend taking us to the airport; for the airline accepting all the luggage; for it all arriving safely; for a friend picking us up.

We praise you, too, for the time we will have to rest here, for the things that awaited us, for the good things you have given us and for how you will watch over us in the future. It is wonderful to be your child, Lord, to walk with you, to serve you.

Yesterday when a neighbor came to visit there was quite a barrage of negatives about others and worry about the future.  Thank you that in this, too, we can turn to you, be in your light and shrug off this darkness and fear, refusing to allow it to envelop us, instead putting on the sweet smelling garments of praise and be refreshed in the warm and assuring strength of your love.

I praise you, Lord, for the perfection of your being, the marvelous, majestic, magnificent grandure of you multifaceted character, shining in holiness, goodness, love, light and life. In you is all that is positive, all that we desire, all that we need, for you made us to be in rich relationship with you, our heavenly Father.  To you be glory, praise, honor and worship, today, forever, for all eternity, for you are worthy of all the love, obedience and delight we can give you! May our contentment in you give you ever growing glory. Amen.

Provision From Your Abundant Goodness, Lord

Praise you, Lord, for your abundant goodness, poured out upon us undeservedly and bountifully. Your lavish love is evident at every moment as we are kept in your presence by grace, as we are your children, accepted, deeply loved and doted on.

You have given us your Spirit, your grace, your protection, your Word, your guidance, your daily provision.

We can see, hear, speak and walk. You have given us hands and feet to facilitate life. You have provided clothes, food, a bed, warmth and rest. We lack nothing that is necessary, and have far more than we need.

You are the great Provider, the mighty Protector, the magnificent Power Creator, the majestic Potentate. There is no one who comes vaguely near your greatness; you are the glorious One, the gracious One, the good One, the great One. You are worthy of worship no matter what my circumstances may be: in your holiness, your purity, your wisdom, your power, your creativity, your eternalness, your infiniteness you are worthy of honor, glory, exaltation and praise.

Your love, poured out on those who deserve the opposite, is astounding to the angels, to the universe, to us. Your gracious forgiveness and redemption are the opposite of what we deserve, of what we should expect. You are so good, so kind, so gracious, so forgiving, so all inclusive in your offer of redemption and salvation.

You are way beyond our comprehension, yet have made yourself known to us so we can trust you, worship you, obey you, love you. May we do so today in our attitudes, motives, words and deeds, giving you the honor you deserve, the glory due your name.  Glory be to you in my life  through out this day. Amen.
